My maverick with its 600 mm barrel was miss for sure, the 700 mm barrel fixed that, but of course it should not have been this way.

The new Airmaks Krait, that would be a nice compact thing, and it have " infinite" adjustment capabilities in the rear, so you can get that sweet little thing to land on you just like you want it to.

I read that on AGN over and over but I had about 10 FX 177 barrel in every length except 700mm including a custom 380mm barrel and all of them shot more than great. I have 5 177 barrels in my parts bin or on my guns right now and all shoot great so I’m baffled by the claim FX 177 not shooting well by even ernest. 177 especially in shorter barrel is a bit more finicky to tune.

Not trying to start yet another FX barrels suck argument, obviously some people did have issues with accuracy. My experience with a little more than average number of FX 177 barrels is telling me other wise. Curious indeed.

I’m Always thrilled to know when someone has a great experience with an airgun, after all, why shouldn’t they? These things are not cheap. I also do not generalize, meaning, my experience may not be what others experience.

However, it’s interesting. When one person says something, meh, ok, two, curious, a few people saying the same thing, well, now you have my attention & there must be something to it.
Ernest or no one said that they didn’t shoot great, at all. What they said was, “in .177 they are hit or miss” He said I should have sent it in. They would have changed the barrel. Even the one I had shot the tiniest little hole I have ever seen, but it always shifted the POI, and always went back to shooting like crap after a while, like 5 minutes or so.
It’s a hard pill to swallow when you are paying good money for your own stuff. I did everything under the sun to get it shooting right.

It indeed is a lot of money for a gun not to shoot well. Very curious on why or what the cause for the issues/hit or miss. My dreamline is permanent 177 and both of my crowns had multiple 177 barrels multiple times and so far they have been great with no POI shift or any issues at all, even reg creep has been missing these days. Again, just curious on what is the cause of issues like yours, very puzzling. The gun does have a few more parts In order for the gun to be adjustable so very possible something wasn’t quite right somewhere on the gun.

FX barrels have been very consistently good for me especially with superior or newer barrel but no one is perfect.


For OP’s question there simply isn’t a more compact gun then a short bullpup but not everyone likes bullpup. There aren’t many very compact traditional rifles and those are compact had to have the barrel shorten significantly which reduces power. The vet is pretty nice but I don’t like rear cockling level.

It took me some time to find the ammo my Ultra SE likes and I had to drill out the anti-tamper when the bolt got jammed due to an assembly mistake from the factory, but I second that. The BSA Ultra SE is a great .177 12 fpe gun.

The Ultra CLX looks like a good successor but it is very new and I would like to see how it fares in others' experiences before buying one.

The two downsides which make the Vet more appealing to me are: 1) Externally adjustable hammer spring, 2) better trigger on the Vet and 3) quieter overall in regards to hammer slap and noise report.

Haven’t tried many different pellets, but the JSB 10.34gr has been performing as I had hoped in the 800-900 fps range. No regrets going the Vet route.

And a side bonus is I have a Vet .177 and .22 in Compact so as long as I only have one out at a time, the wifey will never know I have two of them……… LOL

Do you have any issues with the side lever location at the rear of the gun?

You know it's not ideal and I've sold a few Taipans over the years because of and regretted the sale. I got the biathlon lever from Tony over at Talon Tunes and it helps a lot. I won't say I've come around fully, would still prefer it to be mid-lever cocking, but I'll live with it.

These are the only guns that make me *slightly* sad I bought my L2. Just a fantastic design and by all accounts accurate and bulletproof.

Yes 🙂 I shot the .22 HP and .30 HP at EBR practice 🎯😎

I have the BRK Ghost .177 FAC Carbine 👍 Will be converting it into the BRK Ghost .177 HP next week, when longer polygon barrel and 480 cc bottle gets here 🙂
