Recs for budget farm pester/plinker

I love my cheap magnum break barrel .22, but it's ridonculously big (48" ; 50"plus with buck rail moderator screwed on) for my little Nissan farm pickup.

I would like around 20ft lbs, 40" or shorter and around $200 or even less.

I'm tempted to try the Crosman 362 or 3622, though they seem a bit light in power....attractively small and cheap.

Also attracted by the P-Rod though it's a bit more pricey...I've never had an airgun with a magazine. Sounds fun.

I can go PCP, pumper or springer...I like them all for different reasons. Also was looking at a cheap, Hatsan Air-tact break barrel.

(Isn't it amazing how much time one can spend on this site educating one's self before making a $200 decision? I probably could have spent that same time simply working to earn more and make it a $500 decision... But that would be less fun.)

I think an Umarex Notos would be a great choice. With the holidays (discounts) one should be able to get them right about 200.....

Oh man...let me re-examine the budget. That looks nice. I have not looked at the notos but now I will. $50 for the Air-tact?! Maybe I will get two pesters...

I’ve bought a Gauntlet and a Gauntlet 2 in the classifieds here, both in .25. The Gauntlet needed a bit of work which boosted the total investment but it has a lot of power, it’s accurate and I like the size and weight. For pest work I think it’s ideal. Definitely not the only choice but I think it’s a good one.

Go to the Airgun Archery Fun website. Wes has many PCPs some of which are sub $200. Most were built by SPA even if sold under another name. If you have questions you should call. Wes will tune a gun for you too, he isn't a salesperson.

I recommended the Notos, the Avenger will have more power, depending on your wants/needs, both are wonderful

I went ahead and got the Avenger from the classifieds. The purchase was a good experience and so far I like the gun, except for the plastic stock. Also, it feels so top heavy compared to my break barrel....but I'm already much more accurate with it. My first gun with a magazine too. I think I will be going through more lead as a result.

The Avenger is still a bit big to be my truck gun....maybe I can justify one more purchase: a cheap pumper to live in the Nissan.

Hi Gsyme - Thanks for posting this; I hope you follow-up with a “how you and the Avenger are getting along” type of post. I am just getting reacquainted with the hobby and your post (and the various informed responses) was super useful. First, because of your requirement for a sub $200 price point (even if you may have eventually went higher). Second, because of all the interesting options (all of which are new to me) - Avenger, Gauntlet, Notos.

I have both a wood stocked Avenger in 22 and a Notos .22 pretty much how it came when I bought it new. I much prefer the Notos for pesting and carrying around the woods. But for accuracy it's hands down the Avenger. The Notos is shorter and lighter.

I'll try to do that jcalvert. I'm glad you found the thread useful. I did too! There are many helpful people on this site, with a lot of experience. So far the avenger seems really accurate and easy to use but I am not in love without it feels. Maybe a wood stock would help ... It was also a lot more fun to me to buy a used gun from an individual here than a new one from Pyramyd, though I was not opposed to that option.
