Red dot or short length scope??

I have tried red dots but getting good consistent accuracy was something I couldn't achieve. I just got a Discovery HD 2-12x24 FFP scope that focuses under 10yds and has an illuminated reticle with good glass for a buck sixty five from DiscoveryOpt.us, tiny scope it's on my Notos.

For short-range target-specific rifles I used to always use a laser pointer. They're cheap and you don't even need to shoulder the rifle to fire.

The main thing I didn't like about them is they give your location away. Not always important, but if you're hunting pests at night it can be. They can be a little more fussy when working out hold-over.

I mostly use scopes for short-range pesting. But sometimes I go with a red dot. The red dot helps with situational awareness, so if I'm trying to shoot a bird in-flight, it helps. But the scope is better when the target is near-stationary. Or at least, not rapidly moving 15-30 degrees in a second.

Altogether there's no best option, just the best option for your situation.

I've had a laser on and off of my AP16 pistols.
I've ALSO...had red dot sights, prismatic sights, a SeeAll sight AND a scope . And yeah, it came with iron sights. So, at one time or another, just about everything in the "sighting" realm has been on one of my AP16's.
I'm always switching sights around on my guns, until I find what I REALLY...like on that gun, then it normally stays.

I put a red dot on my GK1. I've tried a couple of red dots on it. Right now it's got a Holosun, HS507C ACSS. In the picture below, it's a HE508T.

Again, your gun...you pick (mentioned in other posts) !!!
The sights ARE interchangeable ! Put one on, take one off and install another, takes about 4 minutes or less, then three or four shots to being it into range.

Back many years ago (circa pre 20's) I was an avid handgun hunter . Small & big game , small bore to BIG stuff ! I tried all sights mentioned & w/ the exception of two guns I stuck w/ scopes . Some were low powered (2.5 fixed ,4 x) to high power variables, even did some high power variable rifle scopes. My main issue is astigmatism & near sightedness. Dot sights whether red or green tend to "bloom" , causing distraction and red tends to get lost on bright sunlight. If I ever got into pesting w/ an airhandgun , given the realistic quarry ranges and /or night usage , I would probably stick w/ a dot .

Similar to MikeVV I swap between red dot and pistol scope, and store both in the gun case. And of course, you always have the iron sights available.
But not for all pistols . Here for excample a Steyr 50 rf with the 3 alternatives, and changing sights gives minimum of POI, but that depends on the mounts I think.
