N/A Red Wolf or quit the hobby?

I bought my first PCP a few years ago. A FX Crown MK2.

I won’t bore you with all the details but basically I’m completely fed up with it. The POI is constantly changing and I’ve lost all confidence in it.

I understand there are tons of variables that can cause POI issues. Screws, scopes, cleaning, parallax, hold sensitivity, wind, temperature, velocity, ammo, shooter error and so on. I can assure you these variables have been addressed and one by one.

I can’t put it on the classifieds and say it functions well because it doesn’t. Despite shooting dime sized groups at 50 yards! So I’m out a lot of time and money.

So I guess my question is this-
What quality, non bull-pup PCP airgun is least likely to have this issue and why?

Daystate red wolfs seem to be somewhat popular in FT. And that requires a zero that doesn’t constantly shift. Being electronic from what I understand, they are mostly immune to temperature induced velocity fluctuations. This is a big plus for me.

They do have a barrel that slips into the receiver and is held into the receiver with set screws though. And they do have a shroud. So the barrel setup doesn’t look too dissimilar to the Crown. So can I really trust that I won’t have the same issue?

Thanks!

Sell as is stating issues, there are many guys that have vast knowledge of FX Crowns. That said, a RAW HM1000x LRT built by Martin is simple, robust and made exceptionally well, plus down the line you can send it HIM for services which I do and he doesn't charge much. AAA Evols are also made extremely well. Epic Airguns are another full sized rifle. Sorry for what you are going thru...I truly understand your dilemma, it's heart breaking because all you want to do is shoot....

You want a sturdy receiver rigidity clamping a good barrel. Sure, get the Redwolf.

Or, BRK Ghost, RTI Mora, Prophet, ...

Avoid soda straw barrels O-ringed in a shroud and held to the receiver by a lonely little grub screw. Avoid multi part receivers held together with a score of tiny screws.

You are welcome!

What caliber, distance and ammo type (pellet or slug) are you looking to shoot?

I say quit the hobby. The first time the gun craps out all of same bad feelings will return. I got my first airgun in 1997. In 2005 I quit but came back and am sorry I did. The type of guns I owned (air or PB) depended on where I lived at the time. When an electronic gun is problematic, it is an even bigger and more costly problem.
The biggest turd I ever owned was an early Delta Wolf in .30. Get a Redwolf, put in a superior Heliboard and void your warranty. This hobby is a money pit with few winners.

Is this for general use or ft? i don’t know what’s wrong with what you have but it sounds like there something specific that is wrong with that rifle. Let someone knowledgeable look it over closely, the problem could be right in front of you but you just aren’t seeing it. You could sell as is disclosing the problems you’re having. Get something else and find one that suits your needs. I have several that I bought for one use like 10 meter competition, a truck gun, longer range accuracy or just because I liked it. Sometimes you just get one thats a bad match.

I need a good squirrel gun but also for targets.

A .25 cal 25.4 grain pellet at 850-900 I think would be ideal. 1 MOA accuracy to 50+ yards in reasonably good conditions.

I would also like a .22 in the 12-18 FPE range for pigeons and such inside 30 yards.

Whatever it it’s I just don’t want to have to sight in daily or have cold bore flyers.

Hunting/ general use. I’ll look into getting it fixed. Part of the frustration is the the poi shift is intermittent. It’s held zero for quite a while. Then it’s way off again. Then it holds zero. Then it’s slightly off. If I send it off the problem may not present itself right away.

He could always get into competition bass fishing…he’ll need pick-up or SUV, a boat, about eleventeen rods and reels. Then there are entry fees and gasoline and constant repairs for the boat. If he’s a good shopper he should be able to get started with about $30k.

Well, you don’t do bullpups…

Otherwise I’d recommend a Taipan Veteran 2 in .25…

… and a Weihrauch HW110 in .22 for your 18-20 ft/lb rifle.

Both utilize barrels that are threaded - screw into the breech. Both are extremely accurate with magazine systems that are just solid metal discs - no springs.

So, no PoI shifts to worry about.

I’ll have to think on a .25 that is not a bullpup. I love the Crown, but you have not had my experience with it. If you go Daystate, perhaps a Wolverine in .25 - unless you want to delve into the electronic Daystates…

Experienced similar with Taipan Veteran Long .25. Perfect accuracy for months, then groups open up. Barrel cleaning, different pellets, nothing worked. Set aside for awhile, perfect accuracy upon return. Several months later groups open up. Found out beech stock had dried out. Florida's humid rainy season, all was well, dry season, stock became loose. Metal washers on stock bolts solved problem. WM

For a full length rifle I'd say go for an Epic Two (with CZ barrel) or an AAA Evol. Either is like a greatest hits collection of good engineering decisions and execution thereof. Barrel length and caliber to suit your intended projectile and power needs.

No rifle is guaranteed problem free, but the way these are made anything that goes wrong will be easily fixed.

There are lots of great options but none of these guns are immune to the above. Less affected sure. Love my MK2 Crown so much I bought a MK1. Love both. Red Wolf is a solid platform that has been produced for a very long time and has a proven track record. Now is the cheapest time to get one too. A wolverine is also a solid option but the RW is even more consistent. Id think just one in .25 would suit all your needs. You could always just turn down the power to switch from hunting experiences via the trigger menu. They are sealed, waterproof and last a long time. Sell the crown and put it towards the RW. You wont regret it.
