Red wolf: Which is most accurate calibre for shooting 50 to 100m outdoors?

I'm looking to purchase a Red Wolf HP in the next few days.

Use will be for target shooting, mainly benchrest outdoors at 50 to 100m. Is often windy where I shoot.

I had decided on getting a 25 as being best for these conditions.

But I see in the EBR results all the top competitors were shooting the 22 and had outstanding results to 100m in conditions which were apparently windy.

Why did they choose 22? Is the Red Wolf HP 22 more accurate than the 25 outdoors in wind to 100m?

I would have thought the 25 would have better BC.

Very puzzled by this.

It is my understanding that the .22 when tuned to shoot the 25gr heavies, it is incredibly accurate and able to buck the wind very well. There have been rumors that this might be the next long range caliber and weight combination. Contact Zx10wall here on the forum for his input. I have seen him shoot the .22 heavies in the Red Wolf with some nice results. Actually he beat two other guys shooting .25 calibers. How do I know? I scored for him and I was one of the guys shooting the .25 and that got his Ass handed to him. lol.

Actually, I think a lot of the guys that were shooting .22 at EBR were shooting them due to the "one gun challenge", where you shot four events (AFT, Speed Silo, 50 Y BR and the Main Event) all with the same gun. And since you can't shoot anything larger than .22 in the 50 Y BR event, they were all shooting .22s. I'd venture to guess that given the choice without the "OGC", some of the top competitors would have shot .25 or .30 - IMHO. Additionally, there was extra prize money ($1,000) for the highest finisher in the main event if shooting .22 or smaller, called the Gilbert Grand Bonus.

The .22 RW HP in reality can't be considered as a "normal" .22 like we've become used to shooting 18.1 JSB at about 30 to 32 FPE. All those guys were shooting the 25.4 grain JSB RD Monsters at about 50 FPE, which is a higher power than most standard .25 caliber guns. No one, no matter how great a shot they are, would have done well in the Main Event at 100 yards shooting a 30 FPE gun... The BC on the .22 JSB RD Monster is about the same as the BC on the .25 JSB Heavy MK2.

I could of shot anything I wanted, I chose the .22 because it out performed any .25/.30/.35 I ever shot. I compete to do as well as i can, so Im going to have the right tool. OGC was just a bonus :)

I thought unlimited was the only class for electronically actuated rifles regardless of cal.? I know you can’t shoot in open class with electronic guns?, unless I’m not interpreting the rules correctly? Which might be the case... I was referring to the Red Wolf in context of the unlimited class only for that particular rifle & conversation

Ken

i'm sure he is saying the only place you can shoot an electronic gun in USARB is the unlimited class

Spysir is right on the money!, plus you can only shoot electronic guns in unlimited class if you’re shooting USARB sanctioned events

Not so, Unlimited you can shoot anything with .22 cap if you like, its not just for Electric rifles.

@spaw, Ken, what I said was that IMHO, I’d guess that SOME of the shooters would have shot other than the .22 RW HP if not for the OGC.

“ I'd venture to guess that given the choice without the "OGC", some of the top competitors would have shot .25 or .30 – IMHO.”

Obviously you decided that for you, the .22 RW HP was a better more accurate gun at 75 and 100 yards than say an FX or RAW in .25 or .30. Other competitors thought differently. 3 of the top 4 scores were shot with FX .30 guns. Ted said in his EBR psych out video that his “boobie bottle” .30 Impact was the most accurate and consistent air rifle he’d ever shot or seen. Different strokes for different folks.

;)

Just go's to show the skill of the shooters are more important than the guns or calibers 1st place EBR pro division brocock.22cal 2nd place by 1 point fx .30cal 3rd place fx .30cal....sportsman class 1st 9 places nothing under .25 cal 7 FX rifles 2 RAW.

You betcha dupa!!

To add to this, In my semi-limited experience, I was led to believe several years ago that the larger caliber rifles were the way to go for long range BR. I bought a 30 cal. It was good, but the recoil and the loopy trajectory was not conducive to this. I sold it and bought a 25 cal in 60 fpe. Much better, but not perfect. Over the years, I've owned a number of 22 cal rifles (high end, but I'm not divulging who made them). I never had a 22 that I found to be consistently accurate. I do have one that is great up to 55 yards, but doesn't have the energy at longer distances. The new Red Wolf HP seem to show promise, but I'm not convinced yet to the point where I'm going to plunk down my money for it. Ken may disagree with me. I personally feel that the 22 is the right platform for LR shooting, but more development is needed in pellet design along with barrel, valve and regulator design.

Does a 30 REALLY have a "loopy" trajectory? My 30 shoots 44s at 880 FPS. I don't think that would be any more loopy than a 25 shooting 34s at 880 FPS. I don't think the BC is that different between them. I've seen the BC of 34s measured at approximately .055. The 30 about .046. If you put that info into a trajectory calculation there is VERY little difference in trajectory
