Daystate Redwolf standard or hp in 177 for sub 20FPE?

It may be hard to get the HP down to 12 FPE. Maybe with a Heliboard. That said, the HP is a great platform and can generate 30 FPE in .177 if you would like to try slugs etc.
I am currently shooting 12.5 NSA slugs right at 1000 fps and it has printed quite a few MOA groups at 100 yards. I can turn it down and shoot 10 or 13 grain JSB's in a minute or less with great results as well.
If you are STRICTLY going to shoot 55 yards or less for FT then the standard power has the traditionally rifled barrel that is a laser at those levels and distances.

Also food for thought is that the new price of both is the same but the used market tends to pay more for the HP versions.

Good point about the used value.

TBH I'm not sure if I would shoot a sub 12fpe division in the future as I'm just getting going in hunter division and totally hooked on it. As I chew on it more, if I were to get into sub 12FPE, I might likely get a dedicated rifle for that.

Are the shot counts standard to hp comparable with the same fpe, say 19fpe?

How well does the HP do at sub 20fpe?

The HP does very well at 20 FPE.
The shot count does not seem to be affected at the same power levels. At least not enough that I noticed. I have had 2 of the standards and 2 of the HP models in .177. The first mod is always the addition of a Heliboard. It gives you additional levels of tuning and lets you save your factory board as a spare, just in case. Good insurance.

I've heard rumblings of heliboards but not looked into them much. Are they that much of an upgrade?

my SIII arrives friday for the rifle when I get it. I just need to get a couple ranging wheels.

Hello everyone,

I'm about to order a Daystate Redwolf midnight in 177. I expect it to be my primary field target rifle, primarily hunter division so will be running it below 20fpe mostly, maybe sub 12fpe should I chose to in the future.

Are there any pro's or cons to going with the standard vs the HP?
Easy peasy - ask them to tune as follows
low = jsb 10.34 at 890 fps
Medium = jsb 13.4 at 830 ish
High = jsb or other pellet of your choice at speed of choice I went with 16.1 at 920 for pesting
Crazy high shot count and only difference is length of barrel
Heli board can void your 5 year warranty

Thank you. Good point about the warranty getting voided.

The HP is better for slugs mainly due to to the increased power. You will be able to push a wider variety of slugs to useful velocities.
Thanks I appreciate it. Aoa almost had be talked into a standard but thought I would check here as previously someone else suggested the HP as you cna always turn down but not up.

I appreciate the informed advice.

This is kind of a must read for anyone interested in tuning or knowing about a Red Wolf.

I prefer the Heliboard, as I switch calibers somewhat frequently. It's also less expensive and easier than a tuner. @Spray1Mark preferred the Factory board and he worked with both Daystate and Jack, the manufacturer of the Heliboard and had many versions of each, mostly prototypes, I believe.

In general, the HP has a longer barrel that's polygonal rifled and the Standard is a short barrel that's standard rifled. I've found the standard barrel to be much less pellet picky but the poly gives better bc's and can be extraordinary. I really haven't tried to go down to 12 ft lb in our HP's but it SHOULD be possible. My wife won the 50 yard event at EBR using an HP 177 w 16.1s @ 970 against 120 or so of us using 22s. I converted that one to 22 as 100 yard was outside it's real capabilities but just put that barrel in my Red Wolf a couple of days ago for some comparisons w the 20s I've been working on. It actually shoots 10.3s, 13.4s, and 16.1s into near single pellet hole at 30 yds... truly phenomenal...

So... in my mind, the HP is the best choice... for whatever that's worth.
