Tuning Regulated .177 for field target w/power plenum?

... I have a regulated one coming in that I'm going to use for ft. We all know that plenums are typically for performance (power) gains on larger than .177 cal ... but larger plenums do also allow for lower reg settings which can yield a higher shot count. ( <- yes? )

A .177 shooting 10.3's mid-880's ... save the $70 for ammo ( or something else ) or is it potentially a useful add-on?

Gun in question is a Taipan Veteran Standard.

Do you know the volume of the OEM plenum, or its approximate dimensions so we can calculate it?

You are talking about a power level of approximately 20fpe. If the plenum is pretty small, 10cc or less, you would benefit from a larger plenum…provided we are talking about an external (add-on) plenum. If we are talking about an internal plenum (e.g. longer spacer tube), that means volume is being subtracted from the high pressure reservoir, in which case the gains tend to be offsetting.

A common guideline is to seek 1cc per fpe when you can. In your case, 20fpe so 20cc. However, something closer to 0.5cc per fpe is the sweet spot for in-tube regulators. Again, because the plenum detracts from the reservoir volume. Not much reason to exceed 1cc. The law of diminishing returns takes over.

@nervoustrig - hmmm. Good questions and honestly I don't know those particular specs. I just googled some ( "taipan power plenum size" ) and amongst the hits that search resulted in was this thread from a year or so ago here on AGN. Pasted in below is a picture from that thread of @zx10wall's gun -- I've circled where the add-on plenum goes (P) - it's just an add-on to the the air tube. The reg sits right in front of it (R) on top of an aluminum tube/spacer that is the default plenum. You still use the spacer with the reg plus you get additional plenum from the add-on. ( short answer - the add on plenum effectively "doubles" the size of the default oem plenum? ) Re-reading your post - longer spacer that detracts from the air tube - this doesn't appear to be the case.

(edit) This thing - this is the add-on plenum that can be purchased as the add-on.
