Rim fire vs LW poly smooth

wanting to go to 30-40 gr. Slugs. I have an Fx m3 impact in 22 ,700mm barrel.
tried most everything in 23-24 gr area…. No go. It has the heavy slug liner.

i also have a vudoo 22lr that shoots lights out with the lapua super long range ammo.

Thinking of using a LW unchoked rim fire barrel and RWS or ATP. 40 gr. Same length as vudoo.

Any thoughts? I would tune to same velocity as Lr ammo. in vudoo.as well..

Heavy liners are not necessary unless you're shooting. 34 grain projectiles or heavier.

Are you getting same accuracy with like 25 gr slugs with Superior liner as with the Superior Heavy in .22?

If I don't get better slug performance at 100 meter I am disappointed -
I now waited 9 weeks for a Superior Heavy liner to come home.
In Denmark this is like a FAC barrel when it comes to .22. It needs a serial no. to be registered.
I hoped that I could increase the accuracy when i shoot JSB Knockouts .22 gen2 or H&N HP slugs in 25 and 27 grain.
It is not bad at 100 yards. 3 - 4 cm 10 shots group.

But it is depressing that my Redwolf .177 with JSB Knockouts 13.43 can shoot tighter groups at 110 yards, than I can do with my FX Crown .22 with 600 mm superior standard liner.

Daam that is Liner number about 10 that I have purchased for my Crown .177 / .22. I think I had my Crown for 4 years did a lot of power upgrades. Longer barrels etc.

My Redwolf with Heliboard is now 2 years - and I did nothing to it - It just outperforms everything I tried so far. And From ZAN 20 gr. slugs at 100 mm to garden shooter at 24 m in 10 seconds.

FX is like is endless upgrades to achieve better performance, I almost spent so much money on new incredible upgrades,- that I could have purchased a new FX King.

Come on FX....................

I don't have the FX Impact Mk2 anymore, and I never really tried the 25gr slugs. I always went for slugs that had high expansion and worked to get then as accurate as I could. For some reason H&N didn't shoot the best out of my gun. So I never went for them on top of me not liking that they just zip right through iguanas.

But when I originally got my impact mk2 as a compact with the stx barrel liner, it would shoot everything from 18.13gr pellets to 28gr NSA slugs phenominally. Then I added the liner a I believe that the 1:22 or 1:24 twist and I was able to shoot slugs that weight between 26gr and 30gr even better. There were some vrands of slugs in 34gr that I could shoot really good, others fell apart. Once I got the heavy liner 1:16 twist, the 30gr shot even better somehow, and the 34gr shot well but not as good as the 30gr. That may just be cause the 30gr were moving about 960fps and the 34gr were going 890fps. But honestly I feel like it's a gamble, what works on your gun may not work in someone elses. Although going through 10 liners for your gun is not normal, that sounds like there something going on with your gun in particular.

I shoot FX king slug liner .22 600mm .40 grain 908 f/s and is insanely accurate.
I havev a vudoo 360 too , and shoots great with Lapua super Long Range .

Robson..... that's what I was wondering. My vudoo shoots the super long-range Lapua lights out as well !
My FX has a 700mm barrel. I was thinking of duplicating the bartlein on the vudoo and turning one down to fit the FX.
then use the Altrus 40 gr. or 30 gr. ( thinking they closely match the 40 gr. 22 lapua ) I can match lapua or play with speed from 900 fps up.

Your thoughts?

Slugs still a mystery , is hard to know if they will like any barrel. The new karma Red Panda has a Bull barrel and doing good with pellets, but I don’t know about slugs . FX has the heavy liner and work well , Fx is the only company in my opinion who really heave barrels for slugs . A Bull barrel like vuddo gonna work I don’t know. I know a guy call Ken Hicks name of company is Spaw , He is a very well known airgun tuner and gunsmith. He can explain things better , He work in all my guns.
I hope that help you , good lock with your rifle 👍🏻

Yes Ken helped me build my Fx. Worked well with pellets. Then went to 700 mm barrel heavy liner. He had it shooting pretty well at 50 yards.
i want to go out to 200 with the consistency of my vudoo. Slugs seemed to be the answer for that. But lighter ones in the 24 gr vein were all over the place.
going to try some 30’s tomorrow. Thinking the liner will like the heavier slugs. The alts should be the best bet as they are more like a real bullet. Theoretically! I ordered both 30 and 40 gr. Alts tonight. Will try them before changing to my vudoo theory. Also May epoxy the carbon fiber tensioner as well. My other theory is that the barrel moves. Harmonics are not consistent. A steel or poly barrel would solve that issue. But there are other things in the barrel to figure out if it is needed or not. Choke, twist at 16 or 17.5, , land and grove ( slug in lands or touching, progressive twist to choke.
i like the choke idea but choke is only 1” at end. I believe it needs to be 2” atleast for stabilization. I do not think it will make much difference in drag.
anyway, I have some good minds on it…..we’ll see.

thanks for the comments….

I shoot Altaros slugs on my Fx King 300 yards ,
The best I ever I did with Airgun , I was impressed, but vudoo still shooting smaller groups. Airguns getting close , but a custom Rim fire still shooting better. Heavy linear tend to like Heavier slugs, but Fx Impact doesn’t heavy the same power of King . Fx King has the new Dynamic block from FX , makes a good difference. maybe 30gr , 34gr will do better on impact 700 mm . A lot people who choose 40gr on impact has 800mm linear , the reason is power . I have two FX Impacts , but dynamic block is the way to go specifically for slugs .

I think your goal will fall short of your expectations because its going to be very hard to find the precision potential in the Impact that the Vudoo provides.

I'd say if you can keep groups 1.25 moa consistently with the Impact then that's a good compromise. Also instead of trying for a specific velocity I'd accept the velocity that the gun and barrel performs best with.

If you turn down a 22rf barrel to work in your airgun, which I think has great potential, you'll need to use the Altaros .223 slugs or those RWS bullets, or start swaging your own slugs.

I have one 16 twist RF barrel for my Thomas that takes the thicker 22 cal slugs but the RWS didn't work well in it. However the swaged slugs which were custom made for this barrel shoot great. This gun would compete ok with a Vudoo at 50Y but not at 100Y and farther.

Darn hard for airguns to compete with the higher end rimfires.

Thanks for your reply.
If you look for maximum expansion - Especially the JSB Knockout slugs expands very good due to the use of a much softer lead than like H&N slugs.

Anyway the amout of liners comes with how FX releases new lines.
My Crown was born with a STX liner in 500 mm .177.
Then i used some wrong silicon oil and it gave corrosion so I ordered a new one (My own fault.)
Shortly after FX announces the new superior liner and i ordered this. in 500 mm.
The Crown gen 1 has never been over powered so when later the 600 mm superior liner was announced I ordered this as a complete super light barrel kit.
Then I took a hunting licence and bought a 600 mm FAC superlight .22 barrel kit.
Then FX announces the 700 mm superior liners in .177 and bought a liner and made a DIY barrel kit with carbon pipes.
But that was so tight in the stroke that any Slugs was shooting very bad and the speed i could get with heavier slugs was equal to the 600 mm superior liner.
The 700 barrel was then unused until FX announced the 600 mm Superior heavy liners for .177 and I ordered one and it was the best barrel so far for the .177.
Then later they also made 700 mm barrels in superior Heavy for the .177 so i exchanged the 700 superior standard liner to the 700 mm superior heavy.
This is by far the best combination I had so far for shooting 13 -16 grain slugs for the crown.
So the last liner which I havent received yet is my soon expected .22 superior heavy.
So maybe I am "only" at the number 8 Liner :) sorry.

My point is if I had bought my Daystate Redwolf at the time where I bought the Crown, would from day one had outperformed The FX Crown in both Pellet and Slugs accuracy from day one -
and today it still by far shoots way more accurate in both close distance and also at distances +100 m.
And I would have saved a lot of money trying to achieve the long distance accuracy and power that my Redwolf delivers.

Looking at power, the FX Crown will never get close to the Redwolfs power levels.
I test shot several 10 strings group with my Redwolf up to 1045 fps, shooting 20 grain Zan slugs - though it was way too fast for accuracy - this shows the power reserve available in a Redwolf .177 with "only" 600 mm Polygon barrel. The Barrel i would call it.

But I hope my .22 Superior Heavy liner will be my Last FX Crown liner.

If any updates it will another rifle - A FX King instead or it total other direction buying a BRK Ghost or a RTI Prophet performance mk3

I just watched Patriot YouTube video on how they developed the Javelin slug in 30 and 40 gr. Change of plan.
Think Imwill follow vudoo philosophy. I will get 30 and 40 grain javelin and ATP slugs. We will measure them.
Then we will make a barrel to the slug. .217 or .218 we will choke it slightly as it leaves the barrel to give it uniformity.
slugs are ordered. We will also measure the 700 rx barrel with heavy slug liner. I want a 1 in 16 twist.

Thoughts?

The main thing that came to my mind was getting the highest quality barrel they offer. Hopefully it'll be close to the higher end barrels out there like Bartlein and Muller.

Seems many people have the best luck with the slugs slightly oversized by .0005 to .001 to the groove diameter.

It's the higher BC of the Altaros that is the most interesting to me.

Maybe try Gunzilla as a lube for the slugs too.

Might as well throw in a FYI.
Lothar Walther powder burner barrels purchased in the USA are made in Cumming, Georgia.
All LW airgun barrels are made in Germany and distributed in the USA by the factory in Georgia.
I have an unchoked 24" LW poly airgun barrel in .22 I plan to machine for one of my Avengers if I ever get around to it.
LW uses an odd .215/.221 bore/groove size in their .22 airgun barrels both poly and conventional. I'm thinking .218" slugs should work. I asked LW what size they're intended for but they will not say. The only thing LW said on the subject was that "some people have been happy using .217 slugs."
I find it strange that they won't say the intended projectile size. When you put a .217 slug in my barrel and shine a light behind it you see a lot of light around the slug. It may need .219
