RTI Prophet: How to Install the Barrel?

❓ How should the barrel on an RTI Prophet be installed?

I took off the barrel without looking at every detail first — assuming (falsely) that there is only one position and one way to install a barrel.
Well, from what I can tell, the depth of how far the barrel is seated into the action seems to be variable, not a one-position-only affair.

So, how do I know how far to insert it?

What else should I be paying attention to — considering that this is the first time ever that I have removed a barrel from an action? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Thanks for any help.

Matthias

Put a magazine in the gun and slide the barrel up against it. Look down through the top grub screw hole and make sure you’re looking at the detent in the barrel so you know your transfer port is lined up. Put the grub screw back in and tighten. Make sure mag slides in and out with perfect resistance and you’re done.

Yep, as stated, use the magazine as a stop/locating position.

Set the barrel "just" snug enough, that the magazine will rotate with a "little" friction, of the barrel holding it.
Then lightly sung the set screws, one at a time, then a little tighter, going back and forth. Seems that there is no need to go super tight. Just past snug has worked well for me.

Too tight and you can actually deform the barrel bore...and you DON'T want to do that.

OK, I appreciate your input. 👍🏼😊

As I suspected — "snug enough" with "perfect resistance" and "just past snug" are wonderfully subjective for an otherwise precision tool. 🤣

■ I have not been getting the power I had expected from the gun — and instead have gotten air blown into my eye that was hovering over the breech.

I will make a little muzzle velocity test first — then mount the barrel with your helpful suggestions — and see if I'll get rewarded with more power.... 😉

Thanks again, you guys (and this forum) are great.

Hey Matthias, I’m dealing with the same thing on my .22 Prophet Performance. If I crank it up to send Monster redesigned at high speed, I get sandblasted in my bottom eyelid. I can’t believe this is normal, probe is pretty loose in the bore, even with a fresh o-ring. I will check the barrel o-rings next, as they are pretty thin and see a huge pressure pulse.

I shoot pretty high pressures when shooting 33.95’s. The tape is necessary.

Once you get a butt pad on them, they are as comfortable as any other Buck Rodgers aluminum gun. They will never be as comfy as a real rifle but most of us convince ourselves of certain things in order to keep shooting what we think is cool. Until technology lets a carbine rifle shoot as hard as a bullpup, we’re stuck shooting odd little things.
