I made one of these as well. There is one downside to it (maybe not a big deal to some), and that is you constantly have to tape/or swap out the cover plate so the mulch does not fall out.

I just keep a roll of duct tape handy. Every time I stop shooting I just tape the holes. Once or twice a year I have to replace the box depending how much I shoot or how wet the box gets from sitting on the ground.

What material are you using for the front? That makes a big difference in how much taping/swapping you have to do.

You can just put it in a cardboard box and tape it closed. Very easy and when the box is shot, toss it out. I picked the rubber mulch up at Lowes for under $10.

I figured out what's up with my shot box, my wife picked up wooden mulch instead of rubber mulch 
. So I got some rubber mulch on the way and I will redo the box next weekend. Thanks for the help.

I use the foam poster board they sell in Wal Mart for $1.77 and for $1.00 a sheet at the Dollar Tree. I use one for holding the mulch back and another for the 8.5" x 11" paper targets. I have used this for two years to sight in, and make mil dot holdover range cards, and have not replaced the foam yet. To replace the foam I simply lay the target on its back and slide out the foam.

A side note to the construction of my new pellet trap. When I recovered some of the mulch from my temporary pellet trap I noted how my new Wildcat .25 was making it into the backer board. Granted it was only filled to a depth of about four inches but shooting at the same spot could penetrate even deeper levels of mulch with repeated shots. Therefore I am glad I used a nice piece of steel for a backer plate for a level of insurance and safety. Bill
