Rule Change Proposal for AAFTA Field Target

Because it will be below 60 degrees obviously! Plus god forbid we have a drop of rain or two............

Once we have more help for @Motorhead maybe we can open the entire year, I plan to help out as much as I can and I have no interest in real hunting because I'm too lazy. AFAIK the FT matches in concord is all year around.

Wayne(@Airgunoregon): don't worry about us, do what you think is best for YOU and YOUR members! I honestly don't see why wouldn't we give proposals a try at least, nothing ventured nothing gained! If it doesn't work then they can change it back, what's the big deal? Just entertainment like bridge club anyways.
yeah i hate winters also , cold blustery Burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

No to all. I shoot FT and this sounds like a nightmare. A friend of mine was talking and one of his ideas was having a 30fp class. The lanes would have four targets per lane. Regular shooters (ft and hunter ) shoot first three and the 30fp shoot the furthest three. They could use range finders or be told of distance. This would allow for people with there regular hunting rigs to give it a try. Hopefully by the time the pellet got to the second, third and fourth target it would have lost enough energy that well made target would be fine.

491458,
4 targets per lane? That’s way too much extra work. And unless you put the targets way past 55yds, it won’t reduce the FPE enough to avoid damage on 20fpe targets. More work, more cost, more instructions on which targets to shoot. Harder to police. Too much for already overburdened match directors. “nightmare”

But there is EFT, which often has 4 targets per lane and a 28fpe-100fpe allowance for ALL targets. Not a lot of EFT venues throughout the country, at least not yet. They are more difficult/costly to run.

An all inclusive division in AAFTA would be easier to police.

Excellent points Scott, and I agree.

That said, in my efforts to not only found Pistol EFT, but resurrect AAFTA Pistol FT in Texas, my December TEXtreme Field Target State Championships will include a pistol match on Friday of the three-day competition weekend. I am considering doing the four targets per lane thing in the pistol match, with AAFTA shooters engaging the three closest, and the Extreme shooters the far three. This should work because of my pistol EFT 20 FP energy limit.

Granted, it will take no small amount of forethought and monkeying with targets and the course, but I have better powers of forethought than most monkeys. I also have over a month to plan and prepare, then that Friday afternoon (after the morning pistol matches) to convert the course to Extreme Rifle. Hence why the pistol match(es) are scheduled for morning of the day before the rifle matches.

I now have enough experience with my large extreme field targets to tune them all to function reliably with hits on the paddle from as little as 8 FP, yet not fall to face-plate hits up to 80 FP. So I do use the large, heavy extreme targets in Extreme Pistol FT events. It's great fun.

Nevertheless, wish me luck!

Is the match director not obligated to poll the shooting members of their club and vote according to majority opinion?

Tim

The last time a club leader/match director polled us about a rule change, I was told my vote didn't count because I had been shooting WFTF and the rule change in question was for Hunter class.

Hi Wayne.

First, thanks for everything you do for our sport. We don't have a lot of guys like you who put the time and money into the sport that you do and are so successful at lining up land on which to shoot.

I don't think anything I'm going to put down here is news to you. Mostly these thoughts are for everyone here.

These are also my opinions, worth only what you're paying to get them. However, I'd hope my perspective gained by a little time on the BOG might count for something ( maybe?)

The right place to shape a proposal like this is offline through contact with the club leaders within AAFTA. ( That's not a criticism of what you're trying to do here). That's where the hard work has to be done to build concensus, support, and negotiate the compromise to be successful. Without going through that process the result is dumping the hard work on someone else ( the BOG) and saying, "Here, you do it."

When I first got on the BOG I started writing a proposed amended set of bylaws. Central to that effort was a proposed structure by which the member clubs could compel the BOG to make a change to the rules. My proposal required the club submitting the proposal to have some threshold of supporting signatures.

The idea was that some guy flaming away on the forums would have a mechanism to find out for himself the soundness of his idea.

I quickly learned that there was absolutely ZERO interest in a bylaw change on the BOG. The recent change to Hunter rules had been such an onerous effort that nobody wanted to go back to the clubs with any changes. That should be a warning to everyone.

The BOG has done amazing work the last few years. I think we're headed i a productive direction. It's not perfect, but I'm very pleased.

Do we really want to lob a grenade into that progress?

This might be a good time to opine that everyone has an opinion; often about how to do things better than established rules, protocols, and/or procedures. Hate to bust anyone's bubble(s), but that's seldom the case!

'Different' is not synonymous with 'better'. 'Progressive' is not synonymous with 'progress'. And 'new' is not better than 'old'.

The AAFTA Board of Directors approach to governance is a GOOD one. The AAFTA shooting divisions and classes are GOOD ones. The AAFTA rules and handbook are GOOD ones. And thanks to the AAFTA Board of Governors nomination/election/selection process, AAFTA governors are by and large, and almost without exception, GOOD ONES!

However, anyone believing they can do a better job is free to do so. All you have to do is educate yourself to everything AAFTA (easily done at www.aafta.org with only several hours of self-education and a reasonable grasp on reality), follow the AAFTA Governor nomination process, and be elected!

Yes, it really is just "THAT EASY".🤯

Lacking that, AAFTA competitors can submit letters or emails to the BoG; like the OP considered doing before his poll proved it would be a waste of time. I've done it more than once (with a 50% success rate).

However, I suspect the BoG considers the source(s) of letters, emails, and suggestions.
