RWS Super H-Point Pellets

Has anyone used these pellets in a 392?

I used to use them in my modded 1377 and after putting a shallow "X" in the tip of the pellet with a razor blade, they were devastating on English Sparrows, starlings and Grackles with body shots. Instant drops and rarely exited.

I want to try them in .22 in the Benji for chipmunks at closer ranges (15-20 feet max) with the "X" modification.

They were very accurate in my 1377 (maybe it's because cutting the "X" enlarged the head of the pellet causing a tighter bore seal) and I hope they would be the same in the Benji. I do plan on extensive testing for accuracy and in different medias before using them for pest control.

Don!

Yes, please. Do that testing! 😊

I'd be very interested in your results! 👍🏼

As tests of others with different pellets have shown, the media closest to a body hit is ballistic gel (10%).

You can buy it or mix your own with gelatine powder (recipes abound).

I'd love to see the expanded pellets from that medium, and the expanded size. 👍🏼

If you do shots on live quarry, slo-mo video and range/muzzle velocity would also be very interesting! The "exploding birds in a puff of feathers" is a fascinating achievement.

I'll attach a sample of a first rate pellet test that is super helpful to decide how far a certain powered gun can shoot this particular pellet (Bc HEx .22) and still get good expansion. 😊

@JungleShooter

Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to do video, all I will be able to do are still pics. As for media, it will probably be water and modeling clay ... I know not the same as ballistic gel, but as long as the pellets pass the accuracy test, I can start using them on the chippies and compare/contrast the "real life" effects to the other two media.

They go down pretty easy with any pellet I use. Buy some H&Ns and JSBs.

RWS Super-H-Point Pellets
Part 1

I bought a tin of .25 cal RWS Super H-Point Pellets from AoA as part of a larger order, and man, AoA packs pellets well! You'd have to run them over with a truck to damage the contents...

The first order of business was inspection.

Weight is very consistent at 26.2gr to 26.3gr, skirts are good, eccentricity is low (meaning they're round rather than oval, which is good), and the pellets look nice and shiny (that's possibly bad). Normally pellets are lubricated with graphite or some similar dry lubricant, these might be oiled, though since the amount of oil would be and should be minimal this is difficult to determine. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest not all airguns like oil.

Head size is very consistent at 6.23mm, which is .245 caliber. Head size should be 6.35 to 6.36mm which is 0.250 caliber. This is why reviews on PA state this pellet wonders around like a drunken bum and though it hits hard, what it hits is random. Basically the barrel isn't able to grip the tiny head and has only the skirt to guide it, which if you've ever had a female toddler you know is an exercise in futility.

There is also a high count of free, tiny lead flakes in the tin, adding to the expectation of random things happening with each load; it's pretty annoying because the flakes stick to clothing, shooting pads, under fingernails, etc. This leads me to speculate the pellets are oiled, though more on that in a future post.

I want to make clear this is a sample size of only one tin. I did reach out to RWS via their web submission form (in German) to expand on the understanding of why the pellet heads are so small, and so far have had no response.

So far I'm thinking these are like a street bum, best avoided, as these are not what one thinks of when picturing "German quality."

I'll do more testing as time allows and follow up in Part 2.

Hedgehog,

that was a helpful review, with links, and you took action, writing to RWS!

Well done! I'll give you a greenball. 👍🏼

PS: What you say about German engineering / quality..... — right on. And the pellet test of H&N pellets found at HardAir Magazine show that H&N delivers to your expectations. 😊
