They can easily use someone else's legit first and last name and PO box address (friend or relative etc with that PO Box and valid ID) to endorse and or collect money order or PayPal (gift only) payment. That's how a recent $750 money order of mine went bye-bye from a new member here on a fly by night account right here on AGN classifieds the OP deleted himself after that. Got new photos and written name and phone number along with photos of the gun among others he wanted to collect the most $$$ from me. Melanie Jones. Strange that a guy had claimed to be named Melanie but we talked for hours over the phone couple days building trust talking about him and his family and kids all being God fearing BS he preached on and the Lord this and the Lord that (wasn't me who brought up the subject about the Lord). The Lord probably actually helped him get $750 from me in this particular case because I believed him.
I have even been referred to EBay as the scammer said that's his account with 1000s of good feedback and when I tried to contact that EBay counterpart to verify, it wasn't him selling the high dollar air gun nor was it listed on EBay either and didn't know what I was talking about. Scam avoided.
I got scammed even by people sending me current (additional) pictures with phone number and date written on pieces of paper of their actual guns they had in their possession that they never shipped after I ALREADY PAID them.
I even got a drivers license photo with name and address and the local authorities in that scammers state wouldn't do anything about it and neither would their work place who threatened to press charges on harassment if I called again to inquire about their employee during business hours.
I also got scammed and received guns in a package deal that were all beat up and scopes weren't the scopes discussed and one gun had a badly cracked stock and missing the package deal no $350 worth of pellets and missing one gun that was the most expensive one in the deal that made me go for it in the first place. Never sent nor made right. $600 gun plus $350 worth of pellets missing.
I probably buy the most guns related scopes and accessories compared to any other normal human in the world so it's expected to lose some money like 3% - 5% loss of total money spent annually. This year not too bad lost only $2500 plus $2000 ($4500) from getting scammed and UPS stealing scopes from one of my large boxes and resealing and DVOR nor UPS would do anything so loss it's only just under 1.5% of what I spent so far this year on airguns and related stuff.
Sorry, double post, please delete.
Okay, I have a question about scamming. I've been lucky, and over many years of buying and selling have not been victim of fraud, and I guess I'm a bit naive about it. Let's say the scammer cuts and pastes the photos from a legitimate listing from another site, and lists it here. An unlucky buyer (me) comes along and makes an offer to buy. At that point, I need a name and address to send payment. If the scammer gives me his real name and address, then he is identified. If he gives me a false name, then how does he negotiate the payment check? Also, I suppose it would be a good practice to require a photo of the item, different than any photo in the ad, to confirm the listing seller actually has physical possession.
