Tuning Scope centering on Avenger and Gauntlet

So I recently received my order for both of these shrouded bbl PCP rifles in 22 and 25cal, and after the usual tinkering with triggers, moderators, ect. I mounted two quality long range target scopes I had been saving on both. I’ve been doing this for 50yrs so no biggie right?

First the Gauntlet; A 6X24X44 scope on high rings, and with both the up turret and left turret adjusted nearly all the way I am only able to get to 1” low @50yds and on centerline for windage.

Next the Avenger 25cal: A 8X32X44X30mm tube German lensed scope on medium rings, and with the up turret adjusted all the way up and the left turret adjusted all the way left I can barely obtain the centerline for windage leaving no further adjustment possible. However with the elevation turret adjusted all the way up it still shoots 5”low @50yds. I like everything about this rifle but it’s useless like this. This is the absolute worst offset I have ever seen.

I am in the process of making shims but I can’t believe this will adequately solve my problem as it is just too severe.

Are others finding similar problems with these rifles and has any one experimented with replacing the flimsy mounting rails on the Avenger? I sure would welcome some advice.

Many thanks

Tom

Thanks to advice I just checked adjustable rings from NCStar on Amazon. This certainly will solve my elevation problem and sounds like a good product for the price assuming it locks up tight, but my problem also is a lateral one and it seems these rings don’t address that. Is there a product for that?

It would seem to me (an old timer) that the guns should just be made properly and not need a resolution for a problem that shouldn’t exist.

Anyway, I’m going in the right direction and appreciate the advice.

Same issue on my Avenger...ran out of elevation and still was 6" low....A landscaper left a business card so i cut a piece to fit rear ring and that fixed the problem...

others here have stated they found flashing under the rail...I did not want to remove my rail so I resorted to the shim method... I have done this in the past...so no big deal...

You can see the "shim"... white edge....think about .014"...

"B I'm a fan of Burris XTR mounts"

I use these as well. They have plasticized inserts that can be turned up/down/sideways to compensate for your inconsistency. They are easy to use if only adjusting for elevation, a little trickier for adjusting windage but with some patience and a gun vise can be done.

Pay attention to the instructions on the Burris website. Medium expensive at ± $100. Come in short,, medium and tall configurations, like 1", 1.25" and 1.5". Both 1" and 30mm scope tube sizes.

Good luck!

Tom,

there are a few adjustable scope rings that do adjust not just for elevation but for windage: The Sportsmatch ATP90 (picatinny), ATP66 (dovetail), and the Burris XTR Signature Rings (picatinny).

I'll attach a Scope Mounting Table where you can see the different brands, models, and prices (for 30mm tubes). And how much elevation adjustment each delivers, how much scope height they add, and adapter options if you have a dovetail on the gun.

Hope it helps. 😊

So after using two thirds of a matchbook worth of cut up cardboard shims in the rear scope ring channel, four at the bottom rear and one to the right side, and one on the left front scope ring I just shot at 10yds in the dark off my deck in floodlights and can now center with ‘some’ adjustability left over. When I tighten it up after it settles there’s no telling what it will do.

This is my first venture into shrouded PCP and anyone would be disappointed with the results of the simplest of all installations, the scope. My first PCP’s were Unshrouded Diana and Benjamin with no problem at all, and from the top down my springers beginning with British Webleys and RWS all mounted scopes with no problem. However my ‘el cheapo’ Ruger Impact Max nitro piston had to have the scope shimmed also.

My question remains: Is this a shrouded bbl problem, or just sloppy modern production? I sure would like to hear what others are experiencing before I buy any others.

Thanks,

Tom

OK, I like this advice, as the scope cost way more than the gun!

So I guess cheap gun, cheap scope. Or?

Just use proper adjustable rings that won't damage the scope tube. Properly Lap them b4 mounting the scope in it.

I don't shim under the scope. Just use proper mounts and the Burris Signature XTR rings wont require lapping and womt damage the scope tube.

If You want to cheap out then the Sun Optics (formerly B Square) adjustable rings are $20 - $25 (when shopping smart or around $35 if not) adjustable for both elevation and windage.

I'm real anal about my scopes. Seen way too many scopes damaged from stressing the tubes via not properly lapping the rings and many don't even see the damage just the scope don't work properly.

Many don't need to shim the rings to damage the scope too by not lapping the rings.

If you had barrel mis-alignment inside the shroud you most likely would have clipping (pellets hitting the end cap....the Avenger has a very generous opening in the end cap...Personally I think there is mis-alignment of the scope rail itself...(My end cap shows no evidence of clipping...very easy to check...)
