Tuning Scope centering on Avenger and Gauntlet

You can shim a scope ring and not damage tube...I've done it before...it does take longer to install ring caps I'll admit that...and besides the scope I'm talking about is a Hawke.

Is it possible to shim a scope and not cause damage? Seems so, as many state they have done it. Lots of dented scope tubes and malfunctioning scopes in the world also. Saying it can be done doesn't mean that it does not increase the possibility of damage, which I believe that it does. I don't shim scopes. I use SportsMatch rings a lot-their design eliminates the need for lapping and they lock solidly. Same for the Burris insert rings.

Have you removed the shroud to inspect the crown or the lack thereof? I just did a recrown on my barrel by the same manufacturer because shots were going low and left and were outside adjustment range, new crown fixed the problem. Have seen one Avenger with bad rifling behind crown so bad it would have to have been cut off to fix, fortunately, most Avenger barrels are very accurate. No knowledge on Gauntlet. Have also seen poorly secured Picatinny rale plates on Avenger were screws weren't tight.

I hadn't thought of reversing the rings but that makes good sense. While it might be a remedy it would still be cockeyed in appearance and still leave me wondering just why this is necessary, but thanks for the information.

And also thanks to tracker 1955 as well, I did remove the shroud and found a very uniform crown, and after bore cleaning found it to be at least acceptable. At the same time I added the bore stack/stripper from Hajimoto to quiet it down, and after adding a garden hose rubber washer to the end of the stack to my surprise the gun was now acceptably quiet and also accurate, very very accurate.

While it should not be needed, I solved the sighting problem with multiple soft cardboard shims made from a matchbook cover without any damage to the scope tube. This would not be possible on a springer or centerfire rifle due to the tension required to anchor the scope to counter the recoil.

My first impression of the Avenger 25cal as out of the box now that it is sighted in is very positive. At 56yds it is sub moa and muzzle energy exceeds my backstop so changes are needed to protect my neighbors. What could be better?

I plan to tune it and if I find anything significant I will report it here.

Sincerely, thanks for the help!
