Scope question - How do you use your scope for your shots ?

HI I am curious how do you calculate you shot ?

DO you use a FFP scope to mil targets for distance dial and hold for wind ?

Do you use old kentucky windage ?

Do you use a machine like a kestral and a ballistic program like chair gun or AAA ballistics or strloc pro , and use these settings ?

DO you hold or dail ?

Does anyone here shoot longer distances which require a firing solution using corrections for say elevation , like Baro pressure , ammo temp , vertical corolis and make transverse settings for say target lead , spin drift wind naturally and horizontal corolis ? if so how do you do it ?

Just completed & shipped this full rifle tune back to my customer...

Rifle: .22 Mutant Shorty (13 1/2" barrel) shooting jsb 18.1g pellets very accurately @ 825 fps @ 27 fpe...

Scope: SWFA 3-15X42 FFP Scope @ 15X...

Setup: With the Eric Sanders elevation turret, I ranged the yardage out from 5 yards out to 125 yards accurately & created his ballistics elevation label. I also completed his Strelok Pro data if he wants to use holdover for this Mutant Shorty...

You can setup your shooting procedures anyway you like...this video is just an example...

Zero stop shims makes the elevation turret stop on the dot back to his 30 yard zero w/ ease...

Eric Sanders... why does that sound so familiar?

Sometimes I put a piece of tape on my turret then write on it, other times I use P-Touch labels; which both work fine. But I'd like some more info on the oversized turret & Eric Sanders dope tape please.

@jwrabbit123 typically If I don't have my turrets labeled then I use a rangefinder & Strelock Pro. I prefer to dial my turrets, but sometimes I use holdover (depending on the situation).

I made these with Illustrator, Cut out and pasted to the inside of the lens caps for quick reference for 15-65 yards.

wow great some replies let me watch this you tube and explain what I do ,

Ok I have a property to shoot about 200m or so , I shoot daily , I am retired I dail shoot on bench off hand all powers on all scopes , i always dail or hold ,at home

when I can go where i have more range I target as far as I can shoot , I shoot about 50k pellets a yr and maybe 2k in center fires a yr . nd many pcp slugs

I daily one day hold the next I vary from sitting , prone , bench and walking , i vary from red dots to hi power mags

I enjoy shooting ultra long distances and figuring out my firing solutions for a 1 round hit and I do like to try to guess unknown ranges with a mil scope all the time , I some times use wind meters and programs I some time use a ballistic card I made I sometimes use a ballistics app with a range finder , I some times use my scope and a mildot master , I even sometimes bring a pad pen and paper and a calculator to do entire firing solutions for

I learned to shoot with a pellet gun then I went to real guns then back to pellet gun and real guns and both help with other shooting style pcp guns allow to make alot of adjustments for point blamk range which is - 0m to 300M

The wind is seldom steady where I live (at the coast/seaside), and if it is windy and I start dialing, I have to turn the side turret almost between each shot, depending on the shifting wind. Therefore I hold.

And I do not hunt with ag. Not allowed in Norway. So field shooting for me is more like plinking when I am moving around in the nearby area. There is a lot of «free space» over here so to say.

HI I would like to make a comment on the movie

No disrespect please , But you want to see your mils and moa on turret , never cover it

if you want a cheat sheet put one on your flip cap put a tape if reticle or mils/yards for your tune or make a card dont do this here is why

You cant ever have same conditions a turret matched to a retice is not good , picture this , you make it in summer now its 40 degrees different temp so velocities change say colder and 40 degrees slower this is this would be not even use-able say different with ammo not use-able , say weather altitudes corrections not usable , even distance on a grade spin drift Coriolis unusable I cant see how this would benefit it would make other then making it impossible to make circulations

While anyone here who shoots say 22 or 30 or 25 PCP we zero at a yardage and shoot at yardages and learn out values so you know where its zeroed and u know drop at each range with holding and dialing so if u need a cheat sheet on cover make a diameters or numbers or a card and laminate it or phone app , but turrets must be never covered

Here are things which will cause excessive misses a turret for ballistics such as a 5.56 ot 7.62 reticle , too many variables which cant be accounted for in weather and earth altitude ith a program or a calculator or a pen paper or a work sheet any firing solution can be made none of it can be used with a reticle or turret for ballistic or a sfp scope , they just are not accurate enough things get magnified with distance , a tiny amount of error like misreading by 20 yards or milling a target with a sfp reticle which is not calibrated , can be an error of a 12 foot miss at 2000 yards , Ballistic reticles such as H59 tremor 3 on some hi end optics based on the 4thline for wind usually each dot is 4mph I get it , they are quick nd they have their place but a super long range shooter doesn't want a line a .95 mils , he needs to be exact with his mils

I am a accuracy freak and a optics snob , I admit it and I know firing solutions and scope systems

Being "simple minded" I simply mark my scope sidewheel or AO with symbols that represent the holdover required for shots closer or further than my 30 yard zero distance. For example............

After focusing, if a "+" lines up with the pointer than I know to hold "crosshair on", if a "." lines up with the pointer I hold one lower mil dot on the target, if stacked ".|." lines up with the pointer after focusing I hold between the 1st and 2nd lower mil dot (the half mildot reticles help with this), if stacked ".." lines up with the pointer after focusing I know to hold "two lower mil dots" on the target, so on and so forth.

I do my zero at 30 yards with my .177 HW95 setup which is real close to the apex of the pellet trajectory so all aiming is holdover. This eliminates the need for using both hold over and under. I also do all my shooting at one scope power, 12x for my "hunting/pest/plinking" .177 Beeman R9 and 15x or 16x for hunter class field target shooting. I use either a 5-15x50 Hawke Panorama or 4-16x50 Discovery VT2 mounted to my .177 HW95 for hunter class field target shooting

This setup works well for me, however there are some disadvantages.......

* The setup is only good for one magnification.

* One gun/scope/mount & pellet trajectory.

I understand & thank you for your explanation...

My response is: to each their own...

Shoot safe...

If you have a good scope then you can just range off it ...for example in my backyard I have 25,35,45,50,60,75 and 95 yard targets (all are 4x4 pallets screwed to trees ) so I know the exact drop of the pellet at these yards just by using the reticle . After my furthest yardage I have one more dot for over 100 yards .....I just keep it simple. To be honest the really close pesting targets can be sometimes difficult so I just guess and feel.

@jwrabbit123 this is a good point. When I lived in Hawaii the weather didn't fluctuate very much, so I didn't find marking my turrets a problem. But since moving to Texas I've had to deal with the seasons.

I did find a poi shift between summer & winter. I do most of my shooting in the spring, summer, fall so that's what I labeled my turrets for. But this summer I got a little smarter & left a gap so I can read/count the markings just in case the temp swings.

This works pretty well for my typical shooting, but poses some challenges when traveling to different climates.

For example when I travel to AZ for EBR I'll chrony my gun, plug everything into Strelok (including local density altitude) then re-dope everything based on the results.

Strelok Pro.
Best 10 bucks I've spend in all of airgunning.

Dial in a gun for a certain power setting and projectile.
Establish a new gun profile of pellet profile in Strelok.
Select it.
Done.

¿Want to change power, or switch the projectile? ➔ A couple of taps to switch the gun profile in Strelok, and I'm hitting stuff again.

Love that magic.... 😇
