And expecting items that we use to be excluded from the promise of high tariffs on all imports is naive at best. Yes we can wait and see how the tariffs are implemented. Or we can buy now and sidestep the risk of having to pay the government even more on our purchases.
I don't know how it will play out and neither does anyone else. All we can do is our best to avoid extra costs. I know how much I'll pay today for the equipment I'll need. I don't know how much I'll pay in a couple months. You can wait and take the gamble if you wish. I'm minimizing the risk by buying my gear now before a potential steep increase in taxes.
Each to his own. Mine is to pay the government the least I possibly can. With that in mind I'm getting it before the $h!t hits the fan with inflation.
When I look at past "panic buying" I see it not working out for the early adopters for the most part. As a former FFL, I saw people pay $1,000 for a Glock and $100 or more per high-capacity magazine. AR-15s and AK-47 clones were also price gouged to huge levels. Blanket tariff levels being talked about are not realistic IMHO. You also run into issues with world trade as well. Tariff wars have occurred in the past and generally didn't last long in real terms for the most part.
Inflation is a really different topic. I bought a tractor about a year ago for $20,000 less than competing dealers were asking for the same model; thank the car dealer business model of COVID-19 YOLO purchases. Inflation in that year has seen my tractor rise in value by about another $20,000 since it isn't made in the USA and comes from Europe with its issues of higher wages and energy costs.
The reality is that Televisions are not made in the USA and the flat panels would have to be imported if they were. Washing machines might move back from Mexico but, who knows at this point? I'm not holding my breath to buy an EU-built MB, VW, BWM, or AUDI. A Mexican or Canadian option from the Big 3 USA manufacturers aren't on my wish list either. Maybe a Texas built Toyota Tundra with an Alabama powertrain in the future.
Our Air Rifles and Scopes though are probably more likely to be impacted by both inflation and tariffs as mainstream America doesn't buy those products or notice the price changes like they do with groceries and gasoline and other parts of the world promote various policies to reduce or ban firearm ownership including air rifles so I am less optimistic there. Still, implementing tariffs on a massive scale is about as likely as deporting millions of foreign criminals in the first week of the new administration.
All this being said, if you are on the fence and want a new foreign-made air rifle or scope, there is no better day to purchase than today!
