Scope recommendations for my HW97K

I'm considering the purchase of an HW97K and was wondering about mounts. Specifically mount height. Which mounts (and height) did you use with the 40mm objective?

Sportsmatch 4 screw medium height for the 40mm. It puts the objective about 1/4" above the receiver.

32mm-34mm can use the low mounts.

Something about that synthetic stock. I think I need one lol

It's pretty cool. It's short. I put a 1" pad to get the LOP the same as the HW95. The grip was skinny but I fixed that. It fits the action well except for that gap behind the comp tube all HW's seem to have.

There were a few hard edges on the forend and cocking slot. I ran them down with some sandpaper. Other than that it handles great.

It's tough and dosent scratch. It dosent feel cheap or resonate sound like some plastic stocks. It's not a beautiful showpiece but I think it's more functional for my purposes.

I'm not sure about "overtaken by quality". Leupold prices are the big factor IMHO and always have been.

They only make one true airgun scope. It lists for $399.

Some of the new brands definitely approach Leupold quality. But they are less expensive and offer features that appeal to air gunners.

Leupold didn't jump into the airgun market like others did. The scopes you see discussed here are all marketed to airgunners and designed for that market.

It's funny that they can market air rifles that cost many times what a good hunting rifle costs. Yet the scopes marketed for airguns are generally much less. I think this left a gap in the market that has been filled with several brands that approach Leupold quality, have adjustable focus and still fall below a price point that's acceptable.

Soon these imported scopes will cost a lot more. A $50 tax on a $250 imported scope makes you look again at Leupold. Things are going to cost a lot more now and the US made scopes won't increase as much. There may be less price difference to squabble about.

Banking on Import Taxes that haven't been implemented yet is premature at a minimum. Especially on products that are relatively low volume and aren't loaded with "spyware". A ~$200 scope isn't an >$1500 cellphone or laptop.

And expecting items that we use to be excluded from the promise of high tariffs on all imports is naive at best. Yes we can wait and see how the tariffs are implemented. Or we can buy now and sidestep the risk of having to pay the government even more on our purchases.

I don't know how it will play out and neither does anyone else. All we can do is our best to avoid extra costs. I know how much I'll pay today for the equipment I'll need. I don't know how much I'll pay in a couple months. You can wait and take the gamble if you wish. I'm minimizing the risk by buying my gear now before a potential steep increase in taxes.

Each to his own. Mine is to pay the government the least I possibly can. With that in mind I'm getting it before the $h!t hits the fan with inflation.

When I look at past "panic buying" I see it not working out for the early adopters for the most part. As a former FFL, I saw people pay $1,000 for a Glock and $100 or more per high-capacity magazine. AR-15s and AK-47 clones were also price gouged to huge levels. Blanket tariff levels being talked about are not realistic IMHO. You also run into issues with world trade as well. Tariff wars have occurred in the past and generally didn't last long in real terms for the most part.

Inflation is a really different topic. I bought a tractor about a year ago for $20,000 less than competing dealers were asking for the same model; thank the car dealer business model of COVID-19 YOLO purchases. Inflation in that year has seen my tractor rise in value by about another $20,000 since it isn't made in the USA and comes from Europe with its issues of higher wages and energy costs.

The reality is that Televisions are not made in the USA and the flat panels would have to be imported if they were. Washing machines might move back from Mexico but, who knows at this point? I'm not holding my breath to buy an EU-built MB, VW, BWM, or AUDI. A Mexican or Canadian option from the Big 3 USA manufacturers aren't on my wish list either. Maybe a Texas built Toyota Tundra with an Alabama powertrain in the future.

Our Air Rifles and Scopes though are probably more likely to be impacted by both inflation and tariffs as mainstream America doesn't buy those products or notice the price changes like they do with groceries and gasoline and other parts of the world promote various policies to reduce or ban firearm ownership including air rifles so I am less optimistic there. Still, implementing tariffs on a massive scale is about as likely as deporting millions of foreign criminals in the first week of the new administration.

All this being said, if you are on the fence and want a new foreign-made air rifle or scope, there is no better day to purchase than today! 🙂

In the past, a weak Dollar or strong Euro/Yen had the biggest impact on my life.

High taxation nation residents I spoke with complained most about exchange rates on their currency to or from the USD. Tariffs were rarely mentioned.

We can focus on tariffs, or inflation, or currency exchange rates but, the reality is all of them play a critical role in what a product costs.

Hi everyone! New member here checking in. I've been lurking here for a while as I recently purchased a new HW97k. I'd like to hear some recommendations on scopes from you guys. I'm just planning to target shoot and some pest control. I'd like the scope to be SFP with a IR, pretty good clarity, and definitely durable to handle the recoil. This will probably get shot a lot to take care of some rats in the area.(y)
don't know where you are so really can't recommend any particular scope suitable for the area your in , sorry
