Scope vs Red Dot

I run the reflex red dot for field of view reasons all around the red dot for rapid target acquisition varmiting. You see the groups I can achieve at 25 yards. I don't think in my case off hand a scope would do better. I have a real red dot (aim-point like) and it does not work nearly as good as the reflex sight on an air pistol. Like you, I also run a laser in parallel with the reflex sight. I can then use them together in tandem. I switch the reflex to green and turn the laser on for short range targets. I modified the laser sight on my milling machine to fit the rebate on the left side of the PP700SA shroud. This allows the laser to hug the barrel line closely. It is adjusted dead parallel to the barrel. In use, it is easy to clearly see the hold over required above the intended target up to 25 yards because of the loopy trajectory of a 700 ft/sec pellet and a high reflex sight line above the barrel line. My reflex is zeroed in at 25 yards and at that range both the red laser and the green reflex dots merge. It's pretty cool. . . . . .no more hold over guessing at shorter ranges.

I have red/green dot sights on most of pistols, I have SeeAll sights on one, soon to be two of my springer pistols.

I have red/green dot sights on more rifles than scopes. And I may be getting one more dot sight to replace a scope on one rifle.

P.s. - The Holosun shown above, has solar cells on the top strap, to help me keep shooting if the battery dies.

We'll agree on the rapid target acquisition aspect and disagree on the absolute precision possible. But it's good that you can shoot accurately enough with your setup to be satisfied with it. That is what matters.

As I think Steve notes, "off-hand" and "precision" don't much go together with most of these guns. Not unless you have a $2000+ single shot and have been practicing, one hand shooting since you were 5.

Also like Steve, off-hand shooting is much more fun. While you don't get one groups often, the person holding the gun is doing the accuracy...NOT the bench and tripod..! Most anyone can do that well. Takes some, both skill, a good gun and luck to get 1/4" groups at my 17 yrd range.

Off-hand shooting, to me, is "about" a 50-50 deal accuracy wise, using a scope vs a red/green dot sight. Either way, your arm is still hanging out there in space, moving with every heartbeat and muscle movement. Much more satisfying getting good shots.

As noted, I'll take a good dot sight for off-hand shooting over a scope. As you say, "that's what matters".

Different methods of shooting certainly exist. As noted, I consider a pistol primarily an "off-hand" shooting device and shoot that way most of the time. But I will rest one for any shot at a small target when I can. That seems only sensible to me but others may prefer the challenge of always shooting offhand. If that works for you, great. Many don't do that if the option to rest exists. As to the maximum in potential aiming accuracy I simply do not believe that either a red dot or reflex can match the potential of the scope. JMO, and you certainly have a different view.

Valid opinion-for you. Many will agree with you and many will not. As I noted before, I currently have a laser mounted on the HW44, mounted on a see through mount. It works extremely well. But before that I had a 2-7 scope mounted with see through mounts. I've also had a red dot and a reflex sight on it. With the scope, I use the open sights when I can see them and out to a range where they are effective. Beyond that I used the scope. I shoot offhand quite often but will rest when I can (and will always try to rest if possible on a live target). There is more than one way to shoot or to use a pistol. If your way works for you, that's great. Others will utilize them differently. That's my point.

I also think Scopes are for Distance shooting, Rifle or Pistol, perfect for 50 Yd shooting IMO...

I use a UTG Laser for Chipmonk shooting from my Patio usually 9 to 12 Ft, head shots only as long as they stay still long enough for me to get a shot off...12 to 20 Ft outta my Garage, Same MO....

I also shoot at a small metal ground spinner target with the Laser to be sure i am Zeroed in, about 2" Diameter & one handed while sitting in a Porch Glider, FWIW.

Red Dots for my 8 Meter Target shooting in Basement & Garage...

Redfield 4X if I visit the Club or Indoor Range for 50 Yard shooting, looking for a 2X Mini but hard to find these days...

I have the Laser dedicated to my Crosman 2300T, SS-BA, Really great shooter...

pends what your doin and your eyes .. they need to be very good for a red dot or corrected well with a quality set of 'near range' specs just for shooting imo .. that said i would prefer a red dot for action shooting or close-in pesting or hunting but i need my glasses .. that slows me down so my nice red dot stays quietly in the box ... for the bench a red dot is much more compact and a lightweight setup for sure, doesnt lend itself to any kind of range though ...

Shooting 10 Meter Pistol from Bench and Pistol Rest....is a low power 4x scope any better than a Trijicon Red Dot ?

At 10 meters on a bench and/or rest magnification in general is better. For quick target acquisition, hunting and offhand applications red dot is much better.
