Tuning Sealing and maintaining a wood stock without stripping and refinishing?

I have no intention to strip and refinish the stock on my R9. I was thinking about polishing it up with Renaissance wax, then I also considered an attempt at hand rubbing BLO into it and then Renaissance wax but no sanding or etc. I REALLY don’t want to attack this and turn it into a big project I just want to seal it and take good care of it. It’s gonna be a hunter and will be used in rain for sure.

Stay away from the BLO unless you are ok with it sitting for at least a week in a humid free environment before using. I'm actually not sure if that stuff ever fully cures. Personally I only use BLO on things I don't care about and just want to do a quick coat of something cheap.

If you are looking for easy and effective, do like stated above and just wax it. I would hit it with some 000 steel wool and wipe it down to clean it up and then wax it. It'll take you 5 minutes max to steel wool it.

The modern semi-gloss stock finishes are very tough and don't need to be sealed except in the checkered areas, and in the inletting. For checkered areas I apply a thinned stock finish like TruOil and remove excess with a toothbrush before it cures to avoid buildup. For the inletted areas I apply a couple coats of thinned stock finish, wiping off the excess with a rag as needed. For maintenance just wipe down the exterior with a silicone cloth after each use.

Renaissance is absolutely awesome! I’ve responded to other posts asking a similar question because I love the stuff. I used to use paste wax for years and it’s great, however, after using Renaissance a couple times, I’ve never used anything else. I would skip the BLO altogether and just use Renaissance. I’m sure it wouldn’t be an issue but I’ve heard of and seen some weird things happen with boiled linseed oil. Renaissance is all you need, it will do a great job of making the stock(and metal) look great, it will protect a long time and even the small sized tin of Renaissance will last forever. I think it’s an awesome product.

Have a good one.
