FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 09/25/2021

We had 19 competitors come out for the September Field Target Match on a course that was as difficult as the upcoming Republic of Texas (ROT) Grand Prix will be. This was a 60-shot match with 2 targets on each of the 15 lanes including one standing and one kneeling lane. Once again, Terry painted the targets and checked them for proper operation. Since this was a dry run for the upcoming ROT, we had a longer than usual shooters meeting to go over the AAFTA GP rules and remind everyone that they must abide. We chronographed each rifle and checked the muzzle velocity against the muzzle energy chart to determine legality. All guns passed with room to spare! Great job keeping things legal shooters! We also implemented the use of timers with a 5-minute limit for each lane.

With everything covered and with the later arrivals checked in, we started at 9:00am on this cool-ish Texas morning. It was only about 85 degrees by the time we finished at 12:30 which was a nice respite from the summer heat. I didn’t have any really dark targets this match after the complaints at the last match, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t show up again for the ROT. The average Troyer this month was 32.4, SD 6.07, Avg Dist 31.8 yds, and Avg KZ 1.09”, which is about 1 point higher than last month. The match started out a little bit rocky with 2 cold line calls for a malfunctioning target, but after testing with my AAFTA target tester and looking at pellet strikes, the target was deemed functional, and the shooter was denied 2 points. There was another cold line call very shortly after that to check another malfunctioning target, but this time the shooter had hit 2” below the KZ so no points were awarded. I checked the target for proper function, found that it didn’t reliably fall at 4 ft-lbs, so I quickly replaced it with another target of equal KZ size. I think this was the most cold lines ASC has had in one match for years. Good thing it wasn’t the ROT!

Hunter PCP was once again the most numerous and contested class for the day with 15 shooters. 1st place was Scotty Haslam from Boerne, TX with an outstanding 51/60 shooting his RAW HM1000, barely edging out 2nd place John Tafoya who shot 50/60 with his Daystate Revere. Right behind these 2 was Ron Robinson in 3rd by virtue of better performance on offhand lanes with 48/60 using his RAW TM1000. Scotty was on fire for his first trip to ASC, and John Tafoya has really improved his FT shooting skills of late. Congratulations to all the shooters in the Hunter class.

In Hunter Piston, Mark Welker edged out Scott Cotton with an excellent 48/60.

You can see all the other scores and the equipment used in the table below and some pics of the match below that.

Thanks to all of you who helped pick up the targets and lane markers and other stuff after the match. I truly, truly appreciate the effort.

Remember that the Republic of Texas Field Target Grand Prix will be Friday October 22 – Sunday October 24, so mark your calendars and be sure to come out and shoot. You can find more info on that exciting match here.
