Settin up a new FT scope

Download and print an eye chart from the net an glue it to a target frame. Turn your scope up to max power. It will range best there, particularly at longer distances. Range and mark your scope wheel at the following distances using the eye chart to focus on: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55. You can then turn the scope power down to 16.

Measure each distance with a tape measure for best accuracy.

Since you also need a holdover chart for each distance. Put a cardboard box at the end of a 200 foot tape or a use a small diameter rope with yardages marked on tape with some targets on it and do the ranges and holdover at those distances at the same time. Don't forget to turn the power down to 16X for the holdover. OR, range at 32X, mark the wheel and then shoot for holdover, but at 32X the holdover will be 2 times as big as 16X, so write down half of the holdover if you use 32X or one third if you use 48X .

Thanks for writing clearly that a scope with higher than 16x can be used. I use one of higher magnification but didn't communicate clearly.

Do many people set their wheel at a higher x. I know the higher will give better ranging but didn't know the wheel would be accurate when I turn the power back to 16x. I will have to check that out in a while.

thanks, Jim

Thanks everyone for some great ideas. I was concerned about a possible problem with ranging at 30-50X then shooting at 16X but that is apparently a non-issue. Looks like I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow. Yes Pat, I got hold of a used SIII and had Sightron etch a 16X line on the power ring. Probably way over-kill for Hunter class, but man what a treat for my aged eyes. Now if I could learn how to hit something while standing.........Uj

In a points match you can not range at sat 30x then shoot at 16x.
16x max for HFT ( naturally at informal shoots the range master may allow anything) so for ranging 16x would be the choice.
I have seen peole "train" with some illegal style or rifle type oir.... then find out only at thier first match it is not allowed. Many in open class like to range at 50x then turn down to whatever they can hol,d at, just be sure to remember each time.

thank you for the clarification. I would have hated to start this in practice. Only to have to change at a shoot.

thanks
