Sheridan Sheridan/Benjamin/Crosman rear sight removal and installation

I thought I would make a new post for this because my solution was buried in the end of a post I made asking for ideas.
After asking and looking online, I found only solutions that meant beating the sight off with a hammer in one way or another. Not a good idea for a soldier joint. At least to me. So, I came up with this solution. Two identical, tiny drill bits (small enough that the sight prongs clear the bits) and one Buck Rail mount. Could use the Sheridan mount or make a stop out of wood. Removal or installation would be the same. (Installation wouldn’t require the use of drill bits, because the shims are not tapered) Did both my nickel finished Benjamin’s without a hitch. No damage or marks of any kind. Hope this helps.

The drill bits won’t scratch the barrel, they never moved. To lazy and tired of trips to the hardware store. Tiny Allen wrenches cut off will also work. I have a drawer full of those. Anything small and firm will work. What concerned me was a metal to soft like a nail. It could take a bend inward and exert pressure on the soldier joint.

It’s important to know that the rear sight on Sheridan/Benjamin/Crosman pumpers that are pressed on with shims that are putting pressure against the soldier joint between the receiver tube and barrel. Add a scope with a Sheridan or Buck Rail mount and more pressure is added. Soldier joints can deteriorate or time. That pressure can help the barrel to separate from the receiver tube. I’ve seen many that have. Difficult to repair. I see the rear sight as a hindrance to the design of these rifles. A peep sight is far superior anyway. If adding a peep sight or especially a scope, the rear sight should be removed. IMHO borrowed ad.
