Sheridan Sheridan/Benjamin/Crosman rear sight removal

I have in the past removed the rear sight on Sheridans. Always make me nervous because they are really pressed on. Easy to damage the finish or worse, break the soldier joint holding the barrel to the receiver. I’m wondering if any of you have a slick and safe way to remove the rear sight that I haven’t thought of. Thanks in advance.

I've done this a few diferent times, different ways. The way that I have had the best luck not scratching anything is to tape the surrounding area with multiple layers of painters tape and then smack off the sight AWAY from the barrel using a wooden dowel and a hammer. Trying to remove the shims will scratch the paint. I also managed to scratch the paint trying to remove the sight by tapping it off ALONG the barrel. I've had the most luck bridging the rifle between 2 sets of books, holding it upside down, and then giving the wood dowel [resting on the sight] a good smack. You have to commit and really smack it though!

Good Luck!

Edit: I just saw your other thread with those rigs. DANG those are beauties! Maybe leave the sights to avoid scratching anything 🫤

You truly have an amazing collection!

After looking online, I found only solutions that meant beating the sight off with a hammer. Not a good idea for a soldier joint. At least to me. So, I came up with this solution. Two identical tiny drill bits and one Buck Rail mount. Could use the Sheridan mount or make a stop out of wood. Removal or install would be the same. Did both my nickel finished Benjamin’s without a hitch.
