i tried a shim in the scope mount and it seems to have solved my vertical limit issue. I got it hitting where I want at 30 yards with lots of vertical play up and down left on the scope. Hopefully it will hold zero and problem solved. Group reflects more on the shooter than the ability of the rifle as I’m sure the rifle has more ability than I do.

Glad it worked for you. Personally, I've never had POI problems after shimming a scope & NEVER dented the tube. Hope your experience is similar. Stay safe & shoot straight!

I've seen scopes dented without shims and I believe the likelyhood of damage is higher with shimming than without but that is certainly an opinion only. Many state that they have used them with no issues. I don't use them myself but if it works for any given individual then that is great.

With the adjustable rings now available, I don't shim anymore. But over the years I have shimmed many scopes without issue. With poorly machined rings, scope damage can result with or without shims. And the same can be said of using too much torque. If the rings are not well finished, they should be lapped. If done properly, reasonable shimming is fine. I always considered about .020" as my comfort level, which is usually around 20 MOA.

With the few scopes I have shimmed, I mildly relieve the leading or trailing edges of the rings that make up the contact points. This helps prevent the scope from being dented at those points
