Shoot to hurt, no wound, no kill

Sorry if this has been asked before. . .

I've got a big deer problem on our property and want to drive them off. They show no fear of humans. (Maybe someone is feeding them somewhere.)
I've already got motion activated sprinklers - but the deer seem to be getting used to that.

The "Gamo 6110017154 Varmint Air Rifle .177 Cal" gun is in my sights but might be too powerful.
Is there an ammo that can be used or modified so that it won't penetrate deer hide?

The rifle would serve two purposes - mainly to drive off deer. Secondly, to reduce the local rabbit population.
The rifle probably won't get used for more than a few hundred shots over it's lifetime.
I like the price point for the Gamo Varmint Rifle.
Would that be a good rifle selection?

Conclusion Edit: Thanks you for all the responses. An airgun is not a suitable tool for chasing off deer. A paintball gun is however, a useful tool to do the job based on the research that I've done to date. Please read the following responses if interested. My original question is of no further interest to me.

I would not attempt to drive off deer with an air rifle shooting pellets. They will penetrate the hide and wound the deer, even in .177 caliber. The only gun I’d even consider for that job would be an air soft gun shooting plastic bb’s to put a sting to them. Maybe a daisy red ryder BB gun. Depends on distance to deer as well. The Gamo could be used for taking rabbit depending on how accurate you are with it. It certainly has enough punch to do the job.

I'll go a step further... Might want to edit your title and text, especially for your first post. Not much tolerance for illegal 'hunting'.

Unless he already changed it i dont see anywhere at that he says he want to kill the deer. Doesnt want to hurt only drive them away. Illegal hunting??

Ive had people around where i live shoot deer out of the garden and contact the game wardens and they was okay with it.

Get cheap Paintball gun. Will not hurt deer, but for sure will scare.

Motion activated sprinklers worked for me, so far against deer, but this year I had raccoons trashing my peach trees every single night. Sprinklers didn't stop them at all.

I'm getting .30 cal Vulcan, I can't put sprinkler next to each tree.

If I put sprinklers next to peaches, they go and trash apple trees. Eat leaves, brake branches, damage tree bark to the point tree just dies. I already spent hundreds $$, trying to replace apple trees, each time I plant new tree, it will be destroyed in few months - time to protect my property

Hunting was in ' ' so don't jump to conclusions too fast. Shooting a game animal with intent to hit it is hunting/poaching/harm/pick a term. If a pellet were found lodged in a deer around here, there would be animal cruelty charges on the table at a minimum. Won't say another word on this topic.

The OP didn't mention if he was in a town or city where hunting was allowed or not. If it is contact you fish and wildlife and see if you can get nuisance tags to destroy any problem deer. I talked to a guy earlier this year that was using a radio on a motion switch, he had the radio in a plastic 55 gallon barrel where the rain couldn't get to it, said it worked prety good.

I wouldn't use a pellet gun but it seems that paintball guns are an effective way to deter and drive away animals as referenced in an article I read about their use in Washington state. Obviously this is not considered hunting or poaching.

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT -- Nevermind the Tasers and high-powered weaponry in their vehicles. When law enforcement officers arrived around 6 this morning to deal with three moose on Interstate 90 near Liberty Lake, they were armed with guns you can buy at a toy store.

Washington State Troopers blocked I-90 traffic while state Fish and Wildlife Police "escorted" three yearlings out of traffic toward the Spokane River. To keep the moose moving, the officers used paintball guns.

"Two officers went at them on foot and stung them every now and then with the paintball guns," said Capt. Mike Whorton of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department. "Pretty soon they ran across all four lands of I-90 and out of the way of traffic."

Whorton said one of his officers tested his own paintball gun last year for harassing and moving wildlife out of danger. The test was so successful, a local sportsmen's group has purchased paintball guns for all of the area Fish and Wildlife police, he said.

"Paintball guns can get off a lot of shots rapidly and accurrately," he said. "They are so much more effective and cost effective than the rubber bullets we had been firing out of 12-gauge shotguns. And aside from some pink paint on their rumps, the paintballs don't do any more than sting the moose."

Get a big dog with an invisible fence so he wont run off. But if the deer come inside he will chase them off. Shooting deer with a pellet gun will only lead you to a court room. find another way. I have to assume you moved to an area that were full of deer already. Talk to neighbors or your local DEC and get suggestions. If you have a large property where hunting is allowed let a few friends or neighbors hunt it til the herd thins out. You will have people lined up to be your friend. Good luck doing the RIGHT thing.

Thanks for the replies. A Paintball gun was my first idea. When shopping for a paintball gun, the guy at Dick's Sporting Goods said that the pellet gun rifle would work and not penetrate hide.
I did not believe him, thus my question posted on this forum.

One or two of the responses here were of the typical low comprehension variety (to be expected) and one exceptionally good post regarding the paintball guns used by officers.
But, yes, as I suspected, the air gun rifle is too high powered for my main purpose (to inflict hurt, no wound, no kill) on the deer.

Yes, I do live in somewhat rural area - all lots are 5 or 2.5 acres.
Been here 25 years and the developers have cut down many surrounding acres of forest to build homes.
We see new fawns every year and I wonder what happens to them - there's no hunting in this area and the coyotes and racoons have all but disappeared. I assume that disease now probably kills off some of the deer population.

Oh! One last question. . .is it possible to modify the pellet gun ammunition to get a less penetrating round?
Or is there a plastic or less dangerous pellet that could be used?

Just Google "pest deer removal" and you'll get a bunch of remedies. Possibly wounding with an airgun would not be a good idea.

There gonna' be a bunch of disbelief on this one, but I know of two shoot to hurt situations that I was not a part of and I want that to be clear.

One was with a 22 cal air gun and the other was with a Daisy BB gun. Both killed the deer. Remember I did say there was gonna' be disbelief but I know it to be true.

Shoot to hurt is not a factor. It should not be done.

Having been on the receiving end of MANY paintballs; I can tell you that the smack of a paintball will definitely chase off a deer. You should have no problem hitting a deer in the rump at 30yds. Past that might take a little practice. Use different color paintballs and you can figure out how many deer you're dealing with.😁

It makes sense considering they were originally used by the wildlife department to count herds. Hence the first name they were given.......Paint Markers.
