I got out my .217 NSA slugs to test again. There's was almost no wind and I got a group like this. I'm curious if those smaller clusters show that there's potential and I'm not having a consistent hold, or if it's just because the slugs are the wrong size for my avenger. This is at 50 yards

Alot of questions needing answered. I'm no Bob Lee Swagger, but are you shooting offhand, from bags, rest, bipod? Does the group tighten up at closer range? Are the velocities consistent? I every so often will get a group im proud of with a couple of my shooters, but not all. All my small bores give me barely acceptable groups (hunting) with slugs. I'm sure there's a top tier target shooter lurking that will give more insight before too long. How does it shoot with known good pellets for the avenger?

I might be wrong but that looks like a hold problem. Too many scattered tight groups to be a slug problem.

well, you know as much as most here and the only thing i would say is shorten the distance and test again
but i think you are sure these well not work as a pellet on pellet ammo or in this case slug
i would assume he is shooting off bags with a scope set at an unknown power, why the hold would make difference with a PCP doesn't make much sense and i assume again the rifle can shoot well with some ammo

Yes I'm shooting prone off a bipod with a sand bag at the back. I was holding it quite loosely and noticed on 1 or a few shots that the crosshairs jumped to the side a bit after the shot. Scoped at 24x

I'm voting for hammer spring being too heavy/hard and incorrect air pressure, too much air will cause that.

Change the scope. If the crosshairs moved, or appeared to move, something could be loose.
Not saying that is the problem, just one of the variables that needs to be eliminated.

Another question to consider, did the small groups happen on consecutive shots or did they happen randomly?

i would see what i get with pellets , then look for the right slug or just give up on slugs .

This may be a slug that just isn't going to shoot in this rifle. But before reaching that decision, I would properly clean the barrel, and check the scope and basic mechanical stuff. I have no experience with this rifle or with slugs, but I know that some pellet barrels will not shoot slugs well. When you consider the aerodynamic properties of each, it is not surprising that different barrel profiles may be needed.

The slugs may need to be tuned at a different speed or they are just the wrong size, that is only if your pellet groups are better. I will check various speeds with slugs that will not shoot right out of the gate. I have received a few great pcps that the original owner said would not shoot slugs. I have also run into a few Choked barrels that just will not shoot any slugs.

I will test accuracy a bit more and if it doesn't work I'll just stay with pellets. Even quality pellets are quite a bit cheaper and I don't want to mess around long, I just want it to shoot well

That's normal. As long as your hold is consistent, the movement will be repeatable, and that's what matters.
