After I cracked the finish last hunting season out in the rain and snow I decided to do away with the factory look and go for a much better appearance. I sanded every little detail and worked hard to make sure it was perfect before I began staining. Used a dark walnut stain and let it soak in to define the grain. I sealed it inside and out using a satin polyurethane. Several coats with light sanding in between revealed the beauty the factory varnish was hiding. I usually seal with tru oil but decided I didn’t want the super glossy look for this one. I’m beyond happy with the end result. I’ll add a couple pics of my other stocks that I’ve done with tru oil so you can see the difference.
Very nice! I’m in the middle of stripping my crown stock as I’m looking to bring out some of the grain. Its not a particularly nice piece of wood, but I’m sure it can and will look better. Thanks for sharing yours!
