Sightron S6 10-60x56

Cavedeweller, Your analysis of the Top Sightron S-6 runs parallel with my observation of the S6 5-32x56 SFP I mentioned on this forum a couple weeks ago. I was about to re-mortgage the house when I first started reading your recent posts. I do think the illuminated reticle on yours is much superior to the one I have but is it $500 better??? I had pretty much concluded that there is no scope at 16X that will range find with the more powerful scopes of the other AFFTA classes that I can afford and you have saved me from myself. Thank you!
Last weekend My lower powered S6 ranged well enough that I shot a 51 out of 60 on a new course with a 33 -34ish Troyer. I missed 6 out of my 8 forced position shots. Reckoned, that is where my efforts will be going forward. Last December my wife and I both came down with Covert and after having all my boosters I managed threw it pretty decent with the exception of Vertigo. I have been slow to recover from that. Just can't shoot standing the way I use to and still working on my kneeling game.

I'll know by sunday cometh! if it doesn't perform..... it's going back.
@Bramezy well it performs better than anything else 9-35 yards at 16X but thereafter it’s the same struggle just with more wheel rotation. Definitely a keeper as it’s just too damn fine to let go of. And bump this up to 30X and wowza 35 out!

Same with my S3. On 30x its amazing ranging. But thats not the game Im playing so is what it is. Still a damn fine scope.

9/1/2024. Time to add info:

The good first. If you bump magnification up to 30X or more you can differentiate by the 1/2 yard from 35 yards out. At 53 yards we could differentiate by the 1/2 yard.
Thus, this scope, for WFTF, will rock some boats. Great for any class that allows you to adjust the scope during competition like open or unlimited.

I don’t think you can get a better, more accurate, crisp image 30 yards in to 9 yards, from any other scope. My close in 3/8” tiny targets went down very easily.

Now for the bad:

if you shoot AAFTA HFT class you WILL struggle to get a snappy crisp focus past 35 yards on 16 X. Oh well. The picture will still be clear but distinguishing by the yard will be just as troublesome as with any other scope at 16x. I’m still experimenting with it. This scope is tight and has almost no lash / slop.

I knocked down at least 75 targets today in quick succession using my Redwolf while parking on my bucket with sticks and I did 10 standers at 22 yards easily.

I had no trouble with my holdovers either, so the MH-FT reticle will work if you’re paying attention; and it’s illumination is very nice.

Please Remember I’m on my home turf which means I also have general distance information already in my head.

For basic HFT shooters wanting the best bang for their buck, currently I’d stick with the new Athlon Heras SPR First Focal plane or the Element Titan 3-18X50 FFP both in mrad as they are easily $1000. less than the Sightron.

But if you have ANY plans to shoot EFT, Open Class or WFTF or Bench this new offering by Sightron is going to be money well spent!

Excuse me now as I’m going to start practicing getting up and down off a bumm bag 🙄
I'm having trouble range finding using my S6 and would appreciate any advice you can give. I took my S3 10-50x60 FT and my S6 10-60x56 ED FT to the range and found it much easier to range find with my S3 past 45 yards at the highest magnification. It was overcast and I was focusing on the black and white UPC bar code stickers attached to my target holders in the WFT sitting position. Maybe I need to focus on a larger feature on the target, as the bars where hard to resolve at 55 yards with both scopes? Yes, the spacing between 50 and 55 yard markings on my S6's parallax wheel was a lot bigger, but it was very hard to see the focus changing as I swung the wheel over large rotations. As far as I can tell, the S6 has the advantage of higher magnification (shallower depth of focus, but image is darker and more wobbly at 60x) and ED glass (better resolution/contrast?) while the S3 has the advantage of a larger objective (shallower depth of focus AND more light at a lower magnification, less image wobble).

I have a lot more experience with the S3, so that may be part of the reason for the difference, but I'm just not seeing the image snap into focus at 50-55 yards at 60x (or lower powers) with the S6. It works great at distances less than 40 yards. I love the large highly visible numbers on the turrets, focusing down to 9 yards, zero stop, lighter included sunshade, and more positive turret clicks on the S6, but wonder if I'm better off with my old S3.

Please let me know how to range find with the S6. Should I be doing something differently with the S6, especially compared to the S3? For example, the close spacing of the 50 and 55 yard marks on the S3's parallax wheel makes is easier to precisely rotate the wheel until focus is optimized, while the larger swings for the same markings on the S6 makes the positioning a bit less precise (of course there's more margin for error with the more separated markings on the S6's parallax wheel). The Falcon X50 10-50x60 FT scope can either have a snap or fine focus option, and I'm wondering if the S6 made a similar tradeoff in making the 50 and 55 yard marks farther apart at the expense of having a mushy focus that doesn't snap cleanly?

I realize that this could just be a matter of getting more experience with my S6, but I think that I also may need to change how I range find with this scope, so your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
John

Hi John
after 2 weeks with the S6 I went back to my S3’s. Especially since in Hft my mag limit of 16x made it a waste. I experienced the same issues you are but I didn’t take the time to learn how to properly range with it

Hi Cavedweller, thanks for the reply. In post #18 of this this thread you said that the S6 could range find pretty well at longer distances when set to magnifications of 30x and higher. Please let me know if/how you got the S6 to range at higher magnifications.

Thanks,
John

John, although i could distinguish distances better from 40 - 60 yards on higher magnification it wasn't worth my time to play with since i am limited to 16X.... so i sold my S6 and went back to my S3's
