Skout Skout EVO debut!!

Got my new EVO the other day. Family obligations prevented immediately gratification with shooting and testing it! Then the weather turned dangerous around here! This past Saturday morning though, things were just right!

I threw the portable bench in the truck and all my other gear and scooted on over to my buddies place where I could stretch the EVO’s legs a bit! Okay-okay, some details; I got this one with the .22 LW 25” option which is a 1:15.7 non-choked bore. Acquired with hopes of shooting some .22 pellets and definitely some slugs.

Started with 25.39 MRD pellets to sight-in. Got on paper and the FX True BC Chrony told me I was shooting these way hot! Okay, same tune with slugs then…. I love Altaros CNC turned slugs. Not only are they amazingly consistent but they have crazy good ballistic coefficients (BCs) as well. What does a good BC translate to: down range retained energy, less drop and wind drift fighting 👊🏻‼️ The 40gr were the first to fly. Out of the box setting has these slinging at 875 fps. That’s actually a great speed for the Altaros as these boat-tail precision bullseye seekers don’t really like the speed other slugs do. Immediately and with a gleam in my eye, I saw these Toros and the LW bore were a match 😁 To 50 yards then. Clover ☘️ leaf 🧐 To 100 then. Bam 💥 1/2” 5-shot group. Now we’re cooking with gas baby!!

Went to the 32.3gr Toros and they performed very good, although, a bit hot at this tune (945 fps) I slowed them down and they did about the same. Not bad but not as precise as their bigger brother the 40gr! Back to pellets; adjusted tune further and tried 25.39gr MRDs at 970 fps ~ not good. Slowed fps more and they got a little better. Slowed again to 910 fps at 50 yards and they were okay. Switched to AEA 21.9gr and immediately improved. Upped speed with these to 950 fps and they got tight! Cleaned bore, which by the way, is super easy with the Skout! Pulled the barrel assembly and ran patches. Shot the 21.9gr AEA again and they seasoned right in. Shot this 5-shot group and that is my pinky for comparison.

One of my objectives with this setup is to shoot pellets at 50 yard benchrest. Okay, I feel good about that and have JTS 22.07gr coming from Pyramyd Air to try as well. They’ll deliver on Friday 1/3/25. Back to slugs……Retuned for 40gr Toros, this time at 895 fps, and I went straight to 100 yards. Cleaned bore again. I got several good results and then decided to staple a new target down range on my target box. Settled in on the EVO and smashed this 5-shot group:

I am STOKED!! My fun time had expired! I picked all up, loaded up the truck and headed to the house. After some chores I had to measure that 100 yard group with the 40gr Toros. Below is the result and some pictures of the EVO. I was shooting off bags and although pretty good and stable, shooting with bipod and rear Saber Tactical Pro Universal adjustable rest (mouth full), I must suspect will be even better. The portable bench does leave something to be desired. Can’t wait to hit a real range and solid concrete bench!! Stay tuned…….

Nice set-up.
can you cover an entire card with the joystick?
Those slugs shots are Tight! Must have been glupping some air to get the 40g to speed, but isn't it cool that the rifle can be adjusted to fire them!
I have found in my shooting of the Epoch, the JTS and the AEA are slightly different in their performance .
Enjoy your beautiful new Evo

Dang dude! Nice shooting!

I have one in .25 but haven’t gotten to shoot it. All the great posts on the 22LW barrel even had me considering picking up one of those to try.

I noticed the barrel has the carbon fiber outside design. I thought that the barrels that were the full bull barrels from LW and SubMOA were all a satin/steel type finish. I didn’t realize they were adding that outer covering to those too. I like it more.

Also noticed that you added an inline bottle reg… what is that helping with?

It has been great seeing your posts pop up more often again lately. Looking forward to seeing what else you report on the Evo.

I can cover a card from 100 yards. Not from 75 though.

Yes, this LW barrel kit has the attractive carbon fiber treatment. It is a full barrel under there as it has some heft to it. The SubMOA were brought out without coatings. That to me is unfortunate but I believe they are now doing a coating over the steel.

The external reg keeps things at a stable and docile level for the HP and LP regulators. It can tighten your standard deviations and extreme spreads, although, the factory regs already handle this quite well on their own. I would like to fill higher for more shots on a fill and now I will do that with the peace of mind that my internal regs won’t suffer. Thank you for your encouragement 😁

Thanks for the response.

Does that addt’l bottle reg still allow for the gun degas feature to work?

Great shooting, and a great rig! I have an almost identical Evo. I have always preferred a straight black air gun, but that orange just owns me. I just put the benchrest stock on it to use with the Saber Tactical Universal rear monopod, as well as the Yokozuna. Haven’t shot it since installing the Yoko though. Did you notice a significant drop in the noise level? I have some Altaros turned slugs but haven’t gotten to really play with them.

Hoping to shoot on New Year’s day. I’ll be pretty hard pressed to match your results, but will give it my best!

The Yoko definitely helps with the report.
