If you shoot alot, the ammo from a higher end quality air rifle will be cheaper than 22lr rounds. In most usage cases 1/5 the cost or even 1/10 when discussing match ammo. Plus even the nicest target ammo for powder burners 20-50fps difference in speed. I have had airguns with only 2fps or less deviation through an entire magazine. Powder cannot due that period.I will never be the owner of any of those most likely at those prices.
My buddy bought a all metal Hammerli M4 .22lr copy, made in Germany, for under $300. I should have too. It's an amazing rifle for the price, and they are up to $400 now
