SMOKED OUT OF SHOOTING !!!

Smoke was really bad in the Detroit area today. There was no wind, would have been a great day to toss some lead. Smelled like a campfire all day long. Wind picked up around 1700 and took the smell but still hazy. I am hoping for less smoke and haze tomorrow. First time I have wanted sustained high winds, go figure.
Camp fire with plastic pop bottles and God only knows what else.

Justin Castro Jr loves it. The less you manage forests and the more you send out goons to light some fires, the easier it will be for the climate lockdowns to take effect.

And let's aim it down at NYC, Philly, Washington DC and Chicago while we're at it... just for "dramatic" effect.
That’s when we‘ll be told that the US has a serious problem.

I imagine the world is going to come to the realization that planting trees isn't the be-all-end-all "carbon capture" mechanism, if those trees are simply going to burn down a decade after you plant them. Similarly, cities that have "gone green" by planting trees, might find they've created a horrific fire hazard in a big drought year. We'll likely replace all our wood fences with chain-link or aluminum panels, when we get around to fixing all our fences.

I'm on the west coast so I'm not getting any of that smoke, but for a long time I lived in Edmonton and we'd get some pretty bad smoke -- red skies with visibility of 15-20 yards. While the culture can be pretty toxic on the west coast, it sure is easier on my allergies.

The problem is not enough tree cutting. Fuel load builds up, so what would have been a small, confined bad fire becomes a large unconfined one.

Well, there's a bunch of problems. Cutting on its own won't be enough as you'll get lots of small growth that can also burn fast. Like grass fires in the prairies, they roam quickly and can still burn down a lot of homes.

A lot more controlled burns, logging and also re-planting with more appropriate species of trees. Those would be some first steps.

We could also be a bit more like New Zealand and have billions of sheep and goats roaming around, eating all the small growth. That may work in some areas. But it's maybe a bit more natural in a place like NZ where the most ferocious predator is a flightless bird.
