Air Arms Smooth Shooting Springer ? Do They Exist ?

My new Cometa 400 gas ram is a mighty smooth gun. It shoots as nice as my vortek tuned D350 and it's faster. About 745fps. No mods. No adjustments. Right out of the box.

It's not fancy but it is well finished. Its accurate and easy to shoot. Really quiet too.

I'm not sure how "smooth" a pellet rifle needs to be. Nor how smooth they can get. But I like the gas ram action and I'm impressed with the shot cycle on the rifle. From my limited experience with springers it's surprisingly "smooth".

I have to laugh….. 🤣

I’ve shot a lot of guns. That is far from recoile Less. Tuned from any tuner or kit dropper.
300 gram piston over 110 mm stroke, inefficient angled ,long transfer port. 😂.

don’t be up set , it’s just high arcing urination from to much coffee 😉

I've always thought of springers as a balancing act between three things:

+ size/weight
+ cocking/firing behavior
+ power

If you try to improve one, there is inevitably a price to be paid with the other two. Lighter weight = harder shooting/less power. Smoother shooting = less power/more weight. More power = more weight/harder shooting. Improvements in design and tuning over the years have helped, and most any gun can be improved over out-of-the-box, but you can only push the inherent physics so far.

I've come to enjoy collecting and shooting smaller, lower-powered older guns. The R7/HW 30; original HW 50; Diana 27, 35 and 50; HW 55 target rifle; Walther LG 55 and LGV; Webley Mk 3; etc., are - to me anyhow - the "Goldilocks" guns where all three variables are in best harmony.

IT has been proven time and time again all over the world (my experience also) 8.5 FPE and an 8 grain pellet will kill a squirrel (head shot) every time @ 30 or 40 yards . MY next tune will be a TX200 .177 . Polished internals and buttoned piston , shooting at 9 FPE .

IT seems to me
"it " has to be bigger ,faster, farther, more power ,even when unnecessary ,

I had my (now sold) 77K tuned down to 10FPE at one time and it was very docile and a feather weight to cock.

You better be Carlos Hathcock…. Tiny miss to the brain and it’s GUARANTEED RUN OFF.

I RARELY SHOOT MY 30 ft lb gun s. My neck Is a mess. I always grab my 15 ft lb .20 cal Tommy I’ve made.

I have to laugh at your spelling....

Do you mean "recoilless"?

I didn't say it was recoilless. I simply made a comparison. It's a smooth gun. It's much "smoother" than any of my other spring rifles that use a coil spring. The tuned D34 being the rifle I used for comparison because it's mighty "smooth".

Is there a problem with that?

It's kinda strange talking about recoil with a guy that dosent know how to spell the word. But I guess that's what we're dealing with huh?

Touched a sore spot didn’t I. Must have been the splash from the “ high arching urination”. 😉
If you knew the connotation,of the capitol “LESS“. Your lack of insult would have merit..

No problem. Here. Enjoy your smooth shooting guns. 👍

Years ago, I discovered PCP's, and sold off the springers that I owned.
I have not shot a spinger in many years, and I am wondering if anything has changed, over the last 15 or 20 years?
Has there been any major advancements, in the recoil of springers?
What about the newer Nitro pistons?
Was it just hype, or are the nitro pistons really an improvement?

Also, are the Air Arms TX, and HW 97 still reguarded as great shooting spingers, and how do they rate today, as far as recoil is concerned?
Thanks in advance.
After being away from airguns for over a decade, I bought a new .177 AA ProSport this past summer and replaced the FAC spring with an OEM 12 FP spring. Did nothing more than that. Thumbnail-sized five shot groups at 50 yards on calm days from a rest are routine. Recoil and spring vibration are virtually non-existent. It is not particularly hold sensitive, but you still need to be consistent with your technique to wring out its best.

You can get the same result with a TX and probably an HW 97. The AA guns are easier to work on.

I understand some people are sensitive to recoil,it is another challenge to overcome, some people have physical difficulties as mentioned.
I think a R-7 or HW30 can be tuned down to give very little recoil.
I think the recoil thing is also "timing" thing.
I am happy people have other choices in how and what they shoot, I am mostly a springer guy though.

springer through and through

pocket full of pellets and a gun , me and the woods . Shooting pine cones and whatever opportunity target arises.

Have you tried 10m SSP in your ventures. ?
I have not.
I dont forsee any 10m competitive shooting in my future.
Im simply reminiscing after selling off my springers , many years ago, but it sounds like nothing has changed.
I thought perhaps I was missing out, with the latest and greatest, but it seems like the springers that were great 10 years ago, are still great today!
