Hard cases suck to store, that is the trade off, especially if you travel with multiple guns. If it's just one or two it's not so bad.

I use a hard case. We don't have to store guns in safes in Canada, a hard case suffices provided you can put a lock on it.
I do intend to eventually make a safe. I have all the materials, I just need to find the time.

Soft case. Hard cases are too bulky and heavy. Not to say a good hard case doesn’t have its place but under normal circumstances a soft case all the way.

i have been use Doskocil-Gun Guard-Plano DXL hard case for 45 years and i have many Plano soft cases all of which they stopped making in their wisdom
i have never seen any rust after short or long term storage
one thing you all must understand is when you clean your guns some of the oil, or in my case Break Free migrates to the foam and or soft case
and my rule is if you open the case and look at it, it gets wiped down, if you pick it up you guessed it and of course used
over time the case hard or soft will start to be covered in a thin layer of gun oil or Break Free adding protection
if the case is kept in a temperature that goes up and down as the inside of a house does you are in fine shape
if you leave them in an unheated space well it is your fault if they rust
they are your kids and you have to protect them but the only problem is some know-how and others are clueless and so there are lots of rusting guns

https://condition1.com/ makes some nice cases in Texas, as an alternative. They have rigid cases like Pelican does, as well as hard-but-less rigid cases, too. I bought a used rifle here this spring, and it came with one of their Economy cases. It's nicer than other I've seen for comparable prices.
