So how far ??

Hi all

I went out yesterday with my Red Wolf .22 HP with my buddy with his Impact .22 to find out how far is too far .. sort of?? So my RW is running 972 with JSB KO's , He is shooting H&N 27 grain at 860 fps odd . We started at 50 yards then 100 then 146 ( odd number but the back stop was perfect ) then 176 yards. Now some say the RW does not shoot slugs , I dont agree with that at all . I have had some amazing groups with Pro Hunter slugs and JSB's . The odd thing is , I had a pigeon the day before at 161 yards , I saw where it struck it, and it was were I aimed , super happy with that shot . So back to yesterday , The Impact grouped superbly all day , did not put a foot wrong as you can imagine , The RW was BANG ON right up to 176 , Dont get me wrong , we both walked it in as it were , I had dialled what Sterlok told me but the wind was all over the show , Once on there I was hitting the shoot and see target but not as tightly as the Impact . I kind of expected that to be honest . So my question is , How far have you shot out accurately with your slugs ? I want to go to 200 on a Non windy day to see what is what , I also notice that some of my slugs were key holing ( tumbling ) and you could see that on the target where as the Impact slugs were all true . Have you found this at all ?? I shall try and put up a video of the steel I shot at 140 yards , Its a great group ( I think ) I was very vey happy with it , Sorry if this has been asked before .

PS ... Tried to upload the Vid .. Cant seem to do it ?? HELP ????

Hi Rog..... What is the diameter of the slugs you're shooting from your Red Wolf? According to Nick Nielsen at NSA ammo, the Daystate rifles hate .218 but love .217.

Here's his words in an email to me just last week "Daystate uses LW barrel and shoots .218 not very good but will shoot .217 very good (non poly barrel)."

So if you're shooting .218 slugs, you should switch to .217. Also, if you live outside the USA, I think it's still a good ideal to order slugs from NSA. Nick has a high output swagging machine that gives him the ability to sell 275 to 300 rounds for the same price that others are selling 100 rounds in the same caliber. The quantity definitely compensates for the shipping price. Also, you can buy a sampler pack to find which slug your gun likes the best. This is a non-option with H&N or the JSB's. Accuracy with slugs is a myriad of items, not a singular one. You need to find the best diameter of slug. Then find the best weight of slug within that diameter. Your gun may shoot multiple weight of slugs superbly, but you'll have to do the footwork to figure it out. If your RW has an adjustable regulator, then I would suggest taking 100 rounds in each weight, and send them downrange in 10 shot groups. Start at around 890fps, and adjust your reg to go up by 10fps per 10 shot group. Set your target out at 50 meters (or yards, wherever you live in the world) and run through the paces. It's probably a 4 or 5 hour order. But sooner or later, you will hit the magic combination, and you'll get hole in hole at 50 yards. When you find the magic combo, etch it in stone. Write it down someplace so if you ever have to maintenance your guy you can go right back to it.

But Nick has eliminated one of the potential facets of failure for you. He's already determined that .217 is a better performer than .218 on the Daystate rifles. The JSB's are swagged in .2165. They might be a little too small, and a little too loose in your barrel. But contact Nick at NSA and ask him what weight of slug in .217 he has found performs the best in the RW rifle. He's very nice, and he's very responsive. Any time I've ever written him, he's taken 12 hours or less to respond.

Hope that helps

I have shot almost every slug there is on the market . I have been lucky enough to try samples of shed loads , I have chatted to Nick ( yes he is a nice guy for sure👍 ) on behalf of Daystate as I work with them closely on a few projects , most recent of which was the DeltaWolf . Its still ongoing . So my question is then , How far can you group your RW in .22 accurately ??

Well first let me say with that gun and slug choice You could easily shoot out to 150yds with humane kills! I personally don’t have the confidence to shoot past about 75yds? My biggest fear is when I miss my target how far will that slug travel with that retained energy? I just don’t have the hunting experience that most of you do
