Some pics (and a short review) of ORION's FX Impact high capacity magazines...

Hello AGN,

I mostly use the original (older, pre-FX branded) aluminum Sideshot magazines with both my 0.25 (pellets) and 0.22 (slugs) Impacts. I was looking to pick up a couple of extras in each caliber but didn't feel like paying $100+ for each one - so when I saw that @ORION started selling his own version of the Impact magazines, I ordered two magazines in each caliber in various colors. As many of you know, ORION has a stellar reputation here on the forum and I'd long thought about buying his upgraded inserts to convert my FX branded plastic magazines . . . but now that he was selling whole magazines with the inserts already installed for about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of the original Sideshot mag, it was a no-brainer to me.

ORION shipped my order within a couple of days of payment and I got them about a week after placing the order. Well, that was in late December 2021 and I FINALLY got the chance to play with them this weekend so I wanted to share my initial impressions for anyone thinking about buying some. Here's the summary:

PRO's:

  • They look GREAT! The ability to choose the color of the inserts means that there's a probably perfect color combo for everyone.
  • The quality is excellent. Both the printing and materials used are very high quality and they don't feel like some cheap, low quality alternative. The slightly rough exterior texture provides a nice non-slip grip when handling the mags.
  • The interior inserts fit both (JSB) pellets and (NSA) slugs perfectly, unlike the factory FX inserts that can be fairly sloppy when used with slugs.
  • The magnetic closure is easier/faster to use than the rotating clip on the factory mags; the magnets a plenty strong so there's no worry of the cover coming off unintentionally.
  • They function perfectly. I've tried each magazine and they all cycle smoothly. A couple of my plastic FX mags would occasionally have cycling issues but I've not had any cycling malfunctions with ORION's mags; the spring tension appears to be set perfectly.
  • They're an incredible value for what you get - you can buy 2 or 3 of ORION's magazines for the cost of 1 FX/Sideshot mag . . . what's not to love about that???

POTENTIAL AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT:

  • The lattice design of the magnetic cover can make it a little difficult to see how many pellets/slugs are left in the mag. Perhaps the openings where the pellets/slugs sit can be made a little bigger (without allowing them to fall out of course) to improve visibility a bit.
  • The only other thing I can think of is that I hope ORION will make and sell speedloaders to go with his magazines. I've gotten used to using speedloaders with my various Impact mags and ORION's mags deserve to have them own matching speedloaders.

SUMMARY: If you're in the market for some Impact magazines, you should definitely pick some up from ORION. You won't find a better value AND you can pick whatever colors you want! Trust me, you can thank me later! You can find Orion's site at: https://orioniguanahunter.com/

And here are a few photos showing the mags and how they fit in my 0.25 M3...

And today I had the chance to think about this feedback, and this is the result:

The new skeleton lid!

I agree that Impact is a nice set up. How did you get that nice tan color? I am relatively new to this sport but really enjoy it.

Question...what Hawke scope are you using on that? ( I also use and really like Hawke products). I especially like and use the parallax side wheels that ship with their Airmax Compact 4x16x44 SFP scopes on my FX Wildcat MK II 25cal Compact, and .22cal Synthetic Crown 500mm. (I am trying to keep the weight down)

What scope ring mount is that you are using? I want to move my new Hawke Sidewinder 6x24x50 FFP forward a little on my Impact M3 and I am out of top rail. I off hand shoot 75% of the time., unless I have a door frame or tree to steady with. The Impact is a little Heavier to hand hold, than the Wildcat or Crown. The idea was to have the Impact for the longer shots. You have to be quick to focus and shoot to get those pesky squirrels!, which is my primary target.

I am using the 2022 FX Bronze Impact M3 25cal with the 600mm barrel. Most of my intended squirrel shots for this rifle are for 75 yd to 100 yd. I use the Jsb 25.39 or 33.95gr pellets but haven't figured out which is "best"

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks...that M3 is cerakoted by a local shop in Magpul Flat Dark Earth (FDE); I was just lucky that the Warne one piece scope ring was a pretty close match to the FDE. Cost was about $250-$300 to do all of the parts shown in the photos. I recently saw some better/more interesting custom cerakoting jobs by Utah Airguns and SPAW where they do a two color battle worn look which looks really cool but it costs more and would involve sending the parts out and waiting to get them back as well.

As for the scope, I tried quite a few scopes and a handful of the nicers ones in the $2,000-$3,000 range but found that for my eyes and uses, nothing could be the Hawke Frontiers in terms of the overall balance between price, build quality, clarity, weight and reticle design. I use the Frontiers on all of my rifles with the exception of the Leshiy 2, which has a Holosun on it for now (it had the 5-20x Frontier on it previously). The exact models of the scopes are listed in my auto-signature below.

Since those pictures in the original post, I put a Saber Tactical TRS rail on the FDE M3 but it's black and I haven't had a chance to go get it cerakoted to match. The TRS rail will give you a lot more room to move your scope around up top. I've also changed the barrel over to a 600mm setup because it allows me to get the same FPS as the 500mm setup but at a lower reg2 setting, which means more efficient air consumption and lower report - it's very quiet shooting the 25.4g at around 880fps with that DonnyFL Ronin installed. I highly prefer the 25.4g over the heavier 33.95g because I hardly ever shoot squirrels over 50yds (which is the extent of my yard).

Here's what the Impacts look like now:
