Sort those JSB Hades pellets.

Let me start off by saying that I am not OCD when it comes to pellet sorting. I generally don't care if the has a small ding in it. But I have proved to myself that a very basic level of pellet sorting by weight plays a huge part in consistent groups.

I hopped on the bandwagon and grabbed a 4 for 3 pack of the JSB Hades .22 15.89 pellets from Pyramyd. They seemed to shoot pretty nice. A few not fliers but definitely a bit off from the group shots. I found the fps to be very inconsistent with a wide spread of 30-40 fps. I decided to sort the tin and the results were surprisingly bad. I usually weigh and sort to the nearest 10th - my scale was $30 and made in China with claimed resolution to 0.02 gr - but I don't know so 0.1 gr seems enough for me.

Here's the JSB .22 Hades 15.89 sorted:

Most pellet sorting threads I've read show that a random tin of 500 pellets, when sorted, will produce some semblance of a bell curve. The Hades sorting has two humps in the curve. I tried to show the labels I didn't stick on yet. It goes from left to right starting with the bottom row, measured in grains. 15.4, 15.5, 15.6, 15.7......15.9, 16.0, 16.1. The sort produces two major weight distributions in the 15.5-15.6gr range and the 16.0-16.1 range and is kinda scarce outside of those ranges. I'm definitely glad I sorted these and I definitely recommend you guys do as well.

In true airgunaholic fashion, of course, I had out the scale so why not catch up on some other pellets that are running low.

EdGun (JSB) 0.30 44.75 gr:

Very nice pellets with most in the 44.4-44.6 gr range.

JSB Jumbo Express .22 14.35 gr:

Hard to see based on the picture but most pellets in the 14.1-14.3 range. Curve goes downhill towards 14.5. Surprisingly except for a few stragglers that got tossed in the trash, all 500 weighed in to this 14.1 - 14.59 range.

Biggest surprise to me was the JSB Exact Express .177 7.87gr pellet. I weighed out about 100 when I realized they were all within 0.15 gr of each other. With that small a spread I'll just shoot these out straight from the can.

I hope this helps at least one person. :D

TL/DR - Weigh your Hades pellets. They're all over the place.

Mod edit: moved to Pellets, Projectiles, Slugs and Ammo forum

HI I started sorting ammo about 1 decade ago , Now every time I buy ammo or make slugs or pellets everything gets washed and dried , sorted by looks and head size then sorted by weight .

Is it worth it ? it takes alot of time , for me I wouldn't do it any other way , I want to be sure everything I shoot is as close as possible , I dont want to shoot and miss or wound an animal ,

LOU - I don't hunt. My targets are usually made of paper, ice, steel, candy lollipops, etc. But, I appreciated both accuracy and precision. Precision is really the key - and precision comes from repeatable accurate results. Repeatable starts with the ammunition. If you look at the spread on the Hades there is no way to expect the same shot from a 15.4 gr pellet and a 16.1 gr pellet.

Sorting only for precision shooting (bench, ft, etc), huge weight difference sometimes. For hunting not really needed IME.

Zactly. If I have to put a "group" into my target, I'm shooting really poorly. I hunt invasive green iguana, and go for single-shot kills every time. I don't get them as often as I like, but I try every time. Now when it's about shooting paper, and I'm getting serious about it, then I think you're dead right. And those containers? Brilliant. Tickles my OCD button.

This may explain the results I got yesterday.

I tried the Hades pellets for the first time yesterday at 25 meters with a Brocock Bantam. My groups were bad enough that I thought something was amiss with the gun, so I tried again with the 18gr JSB.

I do have the occasional stupidity with the Bantam, which may be a mag, or the well known breech issue, but generally it's pretty good for what it is. I dont expect it to shoot like an FX.

The 18gn shot just fine. I was thinking maybe the Hades were more sensitive to a dirty barrel, however the weight disparity you found would at least partially explain things.

If the weather cooperates I'll fire up the Chrony and test, otherwise I'll zone out for a while with the scale.

Great info!!

Got the containers in the Walmart fish and tackle section. $1-2 each.
