I have resisted this as I sort bullets for my long range PB shooting, not my favorite task. So yesterday I sorted 2 different pellets. First thing I learned......It's laughable they even mark a size on the tin. One tin I it took over 50 pellets to find one as labeled. The other tin it took over 20. Second thing I learned. There was a size my. 177 TX200 preferred. Third, different sizes have a different POI. The difference is small but it does add to your group size shooting unsorted. Overall opinions, first pellets are junk.....secondly for optimum performance it is a must. These were both the same brand, I will try some others. I expect I will get similar results.

Ya, sizing can give gains but marginal. Id probably sort and size if i was in a competitive shoot for cash, prizes or trophies , but back yard culling out of the tin as i go is good enugh.

YUP same here. (must resist...must resist...finally gave up)
Gonna sort by weight (not head size yet), and lube my competition pellets.
Got a Pellet Keeper from a member here.
Bought a scale, ultra sonic cleaner, waiting on a T9 to lube.
Things we'll do for that one extra point...sigh.
I'll probably regret not spending extra trigger time behind the gun.

I sort by weight only and even by just doing that (along with going by feel/looks) has eliminated almost all significant flyers. It takes next to no time to do and the benefits are worth it to me.

My sorting consists of. Just my pesting pellets. .22 cal JSB Hades. I rarely shoot past 30 yards. I sort by weight. Then when using those sorted pellets. I start using the lightest group first. Then work my way through the entire batch.

I assume you are sorting for FT competition.
Which pellet are you shooting and which rifle?
What is the weight range that you are shooting in competition?
I just started sorting the JSB 10.34 grain. I'm looking at shooting/testing the 10.20-10.27 grain range for accuracy. As these were the weight ranges where most of the pellets landed.
And did you have to resort to a secondary sorting? I don't know if I need to restrict these to 10.22-10.26 grains

I sort for field target and home use but after talking to a few people here I was convinced not to go too crazy, and I feel they were right. For FT I use a TX200 and JSB 8.44gr. I go in 0.1gr increments and just eyeball the pellet quality as I go. I have noticed that certain weight ranges MAY do slightly better than others but they're so close I really don't give it a second thought. My big takeaway is that by sorting out the real outliers (0.5+ gr) I've had less questionable shots ruining an otherwise great group. If a pellet feels off while loading it I'll shoot it away too

I just finished sorting my JSB 10.34 grain pellets. Cleaning and weight sorting two days ago and did some testing on paper yesterday and today.
You are right. At 30 yards...sorted 10.2, 10.25, 10.3 grains...they are grouping about the same.
Since they were so close...I'll just shoot anything from 10.2 to 10.3 grain weight in competition (as these were close to where 85 % of the pellet fell). The rest will be used for off hand practice.
Felt like it was a waste of time...just for maybe a few points (probably at the longer distances).

I shoot Field Target competition.
10-55 yards only. So probably limited value in weight sorting.
If I do any testing from 40- 55yards... I probably need to bench the gun
Actually should have bench the gun for the 30 yard testing...OMG...more testing
75 and 100 yards are too far for my wimpy < 12 FPE rig.

How do you wash pellets????? Just put in a bowl of water, stir softly, drain and dry on towel? Any cleaners???

we go high tech (with the minimal touch approach)
Ultrasonic cleaner and some use water and soap
BUT
some skip the soap and water and use isopropyl alcohol? (faster drying?)
Then you weight sort...then you lube (mainly to protect the pellets from oxidation? some say to prevent lead built up in the barrel?)
I have no idea what I'm doing...just following the crowd...till the gun doesn't group anymore, then it's time to trouble shoot.

I sort to the nearest 0.1 grain. I started by finding what shot best for me. It happened to be AA Field in 8.4 in 4.52mm and AA Field Heavy 10.3 in 4.52mm. Both tend to very consistent by lot. There are usually 4 bins.
