Southwest Airgunners Aspen Mtn Match Report for July 2022

silhouette.jpg

Rex and Steve and Larry and the gang hosted another great field target match/airgun/camping weekend.

Silhouettes on Friday evening have historically been at 40, 50, 60, and 70 yards. We've had a couple perfect or near perfect scores in the last two months so Rex decided to up the ante and do 50, 60, 70, and 80 yards. That's rimfire sized silhouette targets with a ram, pig, turkey, chicken, chicken at each of those distances. One shot per animal. From field target position, and sub 20fpe. 19.5fpe @ 80 yards on a barely-bigger-than-a-quarter sized chicken (4x, 2 per round) is quite a challenge! Especially if there's even any hint of wind.

Scores from silhoutte match.

For the rifle match we set up 13 lanes for a total of 52 shots. Per Troyer, this is the hardest match I can remember having at an Aspen Mtn match. There were 7 targets with a Troyer of 40 or more. For those unfamiliar, a Troyer of 40 is the level of difficulty of a 1/2 inch target at 20 yards or a 1 inch target at 40 yards. The hardest target was a 5/8inch kill zone at 30 yards, a Troyer of 48, and it was up in a tree (side swinging squirrel)! The average Troyer for all 26 targets was a 36.

Of course the scores wouldn't indicate how hard the match is, as these Southwest Airgunners are SERIOUS about field target and shoot accordingly.

The pistol course had a bit lower Troyer, an average of 22. Which was a total of 4 lanes for a 40 shot pistol match. A thunderstorm was threatening and Colben and I were packed up at that point so we hit the road, sadly missing the pistol. Here are the scores from those that competed.

Compliments to the great shooting are due to Rex for his 51/52 (while feeling a bit under the weather), Steve and Bobby for very impressive silhouette scores, my 8 year old son Colben for his 40/52, and Franz for winning the pistol match with a borrowed gun!

It was great to get to know first-time Aspen Mtn shooters Jim and his son Zak. Hoping to spend more time enjoying airguns with them at future matches.

Thank you Rex and Steve and Larry for putting on these matches. Although the number of shooters isn't high, I have more fun at these Aspen Mtn matches than any other airgun events and look forward to them all year.

See you guys next year!

Random photos from Larry and Franz and myself. Fun times.

Posting photos on AGN is a bit tricky after the upgrade....can't delete the pistol results at the end of the above post......and here are some more that it wouldn't let me include above.

These last couple are fun. We set the pistol course shooting under the log, and apparently the log was right in the way for the bucket sitters. Looks like those guys were trying all kinds of stuff to get some shots off!

The young man in the red shirt is shooting a fine looking air rifle!
Amazing little gun, my best on-hand candidate for a do-it-all airgun. I've gotten lots of enjoyment out of that little Short and it's fun to see my son getting to do the same. It's almost frustrating that he likes it so much cuz when we're just plinking or practicing it's in his hands and I don't get to enjoy it myself! Just kidding, great to spend time doing something we both enjoy so much.

Thanks for another great write up Cole!
I think everyone had a great time. It got a little chilly during the pistol shoot with the rain blowing in but the shooters were some real troopers and shot the whole course.
Good times!
Yeah, Colben and I bailed out. We were all for it and then that thunderclap that hit so close as you guys were finishing the rifle match made us both look at each other and say, "let's head home!"
