Squirrel hunting gun recommendations (sorry)

First Welcome to the best AGN , Second a pcp requires an air source , every few shots , (few meaning 20 to 60 average ) what is your budget ?
I would suggest talking a lot first , get your 10 days and 10 conversational posts so you can look in the classifieds here . . RELAX , have fun learning it will save you mistakes and maybe some money .
Now to lead you into a conversation : where do you intend to shoot ?
Stan in KY (used to live in Chicago area )

OK , just counted 20 posts for you , your going to do just fine here . 4:23 PM
Thank you for the welcome! I'm definitely trying to do my research. I initially bought a cheap Umarex Synergis elite from TSC, and it didn't work out, so now I'm doing more research and actually digging in. I was trying to catch the last few weeks of squirrel season, but now I've got months, so I've got lots of time.

I don't have a hard limit budget per se, but I think staying under or at $300ish for gun alone would be a good spot for me. I plan on getting a smaller tank PCP so I can hand pump it, then upgrade to a compressor down the line.

I was digging through the classifieds and came across a smoking deal on a used Benjamin Marauder in 25 cal with a scope for like $230 shipped. Of course, it was gone by the time I can send DMs, but I can wait.

As for shooting, I can shoot 13yds in my basement/crawl space to sight in, but have to travel a bit further for actual practice. I'm going to mostly hunt Kankakee River State Park.

I'm liking the Stoeger XM1 ranger and scouts so far.

what would IL law be for a .25 Cal Air gun , you can tune one down to below 700 FPS and that is plenty for Squirrels and Rabbits .

The 25 cal would be good to use for all small game. I'm open to a 25 cal, I just don't want to go below 22. The only restrictions in relation to speed and caliber is how it's delivered. Over 177 cal or greater than 700fps needs to be sent to an FFL, I believe

If you are at an entry level budget then consider an Air Venturi Avenger. IME they are accurate waaaay beyond their price point suggests. I own one and everyone I know who owns one sings a lot of positive praise on the platform.
I've heard good things about the avengers. I'd definitely be open to one, but probably used. It's just past the top end I'd like to spend on a rifle alone.

You also have to remember that LEO's do not know the laws... They enforce what they want... Same with stores... I had a store personal that asked for my foid for black powder.. NONE NEEDED !! Like my Walmart not carrying pellets..
The only one that knows is the states attorney..
Very good point. Just wish Illinois didn't make it so damn hard to go enjoy the woods.

I've acquired an Avenger .25 wood stock recently, was literally just shooting it. It was used, off GunBroker.com, $230 plus shipping.

Seems accurate out to 45 yards. Likes H&N Barracuda pellets, regulator at 2500psi. Side lever is smooth and easy to cycle. Trigger is pretty good, probably adjustable but i have delved that far in yet.

Pretty quiet without a moderator, definitely backyard friendly.

I'd say you would not be making a mistake buying one. From what I understand the wood stock is far superior to the synthetic. Synthetic supposedly feels like cheap plastic. Downside of the wood stock is you have to change stocks or modify the stock if you want to change from tube to bottle.

Someone suggested the R9. I have bought and sold 3 different price point PCP rifles. But the R9, I will hang on to for probably the rest of my life. It is break-barrel perfection and is 10 times the rifle as any PCP for the same price point.

“But a PCP at the same price point is going to be a more powerful gun, and probably a repeater, probably very quiet, etc.” Build quality. No one is sending an R9 back for a trigger that snapped off, because there is no pot metal in a R9. It’s rock solid. And my R9 shoots tighter groups than all three of those PCP’s I used to have. They were a Gamo Urban, BSA Buccaneer, and Benjamin Discovery. But, there is a learning curve to shooting a spring gun that well.

The old Sheridan will for sure lay a smackdown on some squirrels. But it’s slow to reload and slow in velocity. 20 maybe 30 yards.

As for a shotgun, I have killed a pile of squirrels with a 12 gauge and there is zero wasted meat. Up close, edge them or wait for him to stick his head around the tree to look and take it off. At distance, no issues. Tiny pieces of shot don’t really damage the meat. But if you center the pattern on him, it will obliterate the squirrel at close range. Just don’t center the pattern unless you got some standoff distance for it to open up.

This is not to discourage you from a PCP, I think that you should probably get a price point PCP to start. At least for your purposes. It probably suits you better, and you can and likely will get more pellet guns down the road.

Looks like you’re gonna be going through an FFL regardless, might as well get something with thump behind it. I recently found a great deal on a Stoeger XM1 S4. That’s a different gun from the Scout, the Scout is a nicer gun I think. But I’ll let you know how she shoots.

Looks like Pyramyd Air is offering a free buddy bottle with .25 cal Avenger in a laminate stock. Might check that out. It will wreck a squirrel for sure👌

I saw those XM1 S4s and I was wondering the difference between those and the ranher/scout. I think it's a different size bottle? But I don't know what else is different mechanically.

i knew several Senators and they said a lot of laws are written for the big city's , Gangs and crime . Like the foid card is one more thing that can be added to the list of charges when it might just be a low level theft charge ,

The difference is a lot. The XM1 S4 rifles are basically the same as Diana Stormrider as far as I can tell. It’s probably gonna be a mid power, low shot count gun that is easy to pump. Reviews are mixed. Might be like playing the lottery to get a good rifle instead of a project gun. VS the guns priced just a little bit higher, that offer a more quality and probably better QC.

I appreciate the insight. That makes sense since it is so much cheaper than the ranger and scouts

I love my little Notos and I've taken quail with it out to 50 yards. I did have an issue originally, would only shoot 13.43gn pellets really well. Every gun is gonna have it's preferred ammo but anything over 13gn was grouping over 1-1/2 to 2" at 20yards so something was up, felt like pellets were grating when chambering.

Anyway sent it back and in less than a week they sent me a new one which shoots great with pretty much all the pellets I have from 13.43 to 18.13gn JSB's so absolutely happy with their customer service.

It also was enough to take out a skunk @ about 15 yds with 13.43gn jsb's @ 783 fps / 18ft lbs

Stock it is shooting the 18.13gn @ 732fps / 21.5 fpe

Great little rifle and for the price hard to beat and their customer service is GREAT!

Good luck with your search

oh, and the groups below were at 20 yds

Bold move getting that close to a skunk hahaha. I do really like the Notos; I've heard pretty much nothing but good things. The only downside I've heard is the slower fps and maybe not having enough "oomph" to reach out much farther than 30 or 40 yds on game. It obviously has enough for that skunk though.

I'm really liking what I've heard about the Stoeger XM1 ranger and scout, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't continue to look at the Notos.
