Steyr Hunting 5 Auto Scout.......Or?

Hello,

I am looking for a nice wood stocked "traditional" looking air rifle to add to my airgun collection. I currently own an Edgun L2 and an AAA EVOL .30 Magnon. The goal would be to get something of similar quality and desire, but in that segment. After doing some research it seems Steyr may fit the bill very well.

There does not seem to be too much out there on these and I know they are hard to come by state side. I did find a dealer across the pond that will ship here though.

Anyways, what are your thoughts and is there a different MFG I should take a look at?

Thank you!

I have both the Steyr Hunting 5 Auto and the Steyr Pro X both in 22 cal.

The Pro X is by far my favorite.

Got it from Pilkingtons.

I don’t have a Hunting 5 Auto, but I do have a Pro X and absolutely love it. See my review here: https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/my-perspective-on-3-semi-auto-airguns-huben-k1-leshiy-2-and-steyr-pro-x/?referrer=1

I've owned a Steyr match rifle, and they are excellent quality rifles. Personally, I'm not sure I would trust the Auto Scout operating system, guess I'm a traditionalist in that way. I have a Daystate Revere that I really like, and it might meet your criteria, as might a Weihrauch HW100.

I would absolutely trust the Semi-Auto Scout operating system. The semi-auto LP50 pistol has the same system and mine has been bulletproof. Frankly I am quite impressed by the Steyr quality. The are expensive, and not for everyone, but they work!

I have the steyr h5 semi scout in .22 (40joule version). Bought it 2nd hand. Owner before me took it apart and assembled it not quite right. Had to send off the reg first, and when this did not fix it, then send the gun (without cilinder and stock) to Steyr in Austria. They fixed everything (first the reg, then the whole gun) for minimal fee. Very very good service. Gun now works flawlessly.

my setup includes the 1/2unf steyr adapter and a Weihrauch XLK mod, which works quite well, doesnt weigh much and looks good. I have 7mags and refill after all have been shot, 35 total, so low shotcount is a negative. Balance and offhand shootability is a positive. Quality, trigger, semi function etc is all good.

My prev guns were hm1000x, matador r3, r3m and currently r5, kalibrgun carbines, various theobens.
Out of these the Steyr is best and does not disappoint (if you are ok with the 40j max). Even though an evol is planned, but that is just part of the obsession I guess.

Thank you for the replies. Still pondering. Ya, I would get the 40 joule version - of course.

Being use to centerfire, options are so limited. Tons of options in each segment in that realm. I just have an itch for "another one" and want to compliment my tactical PCP at this point. This seemed like a respectable and good looking (it looks clean to me) choice when compared to others. I just wish there were four or five options.

Thank you for the help

That adapter....does it slip over the barrel and is then put in place with set screws? If so, how does that hold over time and does it gouge the barrel??

That was the other thing. I was wondering how to suppress it and was thinking I would have to send it off to (?) to be threaded.

The adapter does slip over the barrel, and yes, there is a set screw. As for gouging the barrel, I really have no idea, since it has (a) never slipped and (b) never been taken off since I put it on!

I had the full size h5 .22cal - one of the finest guns I’ve owned. Accurate, reliable and easy to work on. I’d jump on a Scout if you can find it, I would 😀. I preferred the h5 to the pro x scout, if you are considering both. I preferred the linear mag and traditional form factor. Pick up a transfer port choke from Krale and you can swap from 40j to 20j with ease. Good luck.

PS forum member mmahoney has a great series of videos on the h5, a must watch!

I too hadda Steyr Hunting 5 semi-auto. It was very accurate and a real hoot to shoot pumping out 5 pellets rapidly. Easy enough to work on as well.

I ended up selling it simply because I am a hunter mostly and I didn't wanna beat the gun up and spoil it's beauty. I had 6 magazines that I kept in an elastic black band that wrapped around the butt stock. Worked great. It was a 40 joule and I did have the extra transfer port as well but never used it (being a hunter). IIRC, I put a small piece of electrical tape on the spot where the set screw helod on the moderator to stop any damage. It worked!

The semi-auto worked flawlessly the entire year that I has that rifle. I was very happy with the performance, just didn't wanna damage it.

Got it....Interesting.

I would be tempted just to have it threaded. But have no idea who I would have do that. Its too bad they do not come threaded from the factory, but that is how these niche/boutique items are sometimes.

Having the muzzle threaded is probably not the best option. Precision gunsmiths will tell you that threading can alter the internal bore dimensions, opening it slightly, which will change the choke. I used the slip-on Steyr adapter, and it worked fine. My only issue, since mine was the full length Challenge Hunting single shot model, the silencer made the rifle very long.

I am not sure what advantages a Steyr has over those other brands and I have read mixed reviews about the strip clip design.

Well, while I don't have Steyr Hunting 5, I do have a LP50 and LGB1 that use the same type of magazines. And once you have them figured out, they are pretty much 100% reliable.

- I say figured out, because the only quirk with them is they don't like undersized pellets. They have to fit snuggly in the magazine, otherwise they'll slip-out and bind the action... I never had issues with H&N and JSB, but using inexpensive Crosman wadcutters is a no-go.

I've often contemplate buying a Hunting 5 for small-game hunting (as good a reason as any), but as much as I'm a Steyr fan-boy... I just can't get over that big Steyr written on the side of the rifle! Reminds me of the big Honda VTEC stickers you see on kid's Civic...

I have a LP5 and a LGB1, both of them are great guns! But the reason I didn't get the H5 was only 5 shots in semiauto gets annoying after a while. Though I'm not much of hunter and more of a plinker which is why I got the ProX.

As long as I've owned the LP5 I had always wished someone had come up with a 10 shot conversion kit.

Love my ProX! It's a dream come true for me, something I always wanted.

Thank you for the replies.....It appears the adapter is the way to go then. If I pull the trigger on this, I will use some electrical tape and just go from there.

In regards to the rail....I dislike dovetail.....I am assuming this negates that, correct? It says H5, but assume the scout works too:

In regards to scope....thinking March. But man, its adding up fassst!

I dislike the dovetail too, but in reality its not a problem, and when you place the mounts smartly, you can take off the scope/mounts combo, and put it back exactly as you had it before. Works for me, did not have to change scope settings yet.

Adapter works well, it is suggested to loctite it on.

Really the quality is is quite good. Only downside is low shotcount, especially in combination with the ease of making follow-up shots. Taking it easy, 35 shots with the h5 take me as long as 10 shots with the raw or the kalibrgun carbine….
