Tuning Still… Fx dreamtac .22 accuracy problems

Hey Guys,

Ive run into a bit of trouble with accuracy in my .22 liners, and ive been getting quite sick of it. Ive run jsb ko’s in .216 & .217 through my slug a and superior liners, along with a bunch of nielsen ammo in .216 and .217 ranging from 17.5-24.8, and even some jsb pellets, but nothing is shooting even remotely well at 40-50 yards.

So far, i think it might be something going on my liners or gun, as both barrels foul up in nearly 10 shots, and tons of lead is appearing inside the shroud. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

What velocity are you shooting the ammo at? The newer liners seem to like their speed from what I have seen. Shooting at the wrong speed causes serious accuracy problems as well. It is highly unlikely that both of your liners would have defects as they would be from different batches. Still I have had two bad LW barrels in a row so guess it is not impossible.

Run some patches with some lapping compound or car polish through the barrel liners if they are new. 50 to 100 strokes should help the break in processes greatly if not eliminate the need for it completely. This will also help lengthen the time between your cleaning intervals also.

The only other thing that I can think of that might be a problem is if the ammo is being damaged when it is chambered into the barrel or clipped by the moderator as mentioned above.

I wish you luck with your trouble shooting.

My suggestion is to get all lead out first, with a proper clean. You might have to use a nylon, or bronce brush first, as regular patches on a phising line will not work. Patchworm might do it with enough passes. I like to take the barrel of when it has lead in it, and use a flashlight, to inspect ecpesially the end, where the choke is while cleaning. You will usually see the lead fouling there with the naked eye. Then I would lube the pellets, to prevent it fouling again. Some silikone oil seems to work for me. I would mainly use JSB pellets, as hard lead pellets easier leaves lead behind in the FX liners. None of my FX guns like completelly dry pellets. So if the pellets you are using feels dry when handling them, do not shoot them without some lube first. You usually do not need much lube, it just have to be there.

What does your moderator look like? Slugs can be pretty hard, but once you said jsb pellets, I would look at clipping issues, put white paint or fingernail polish around the exit hole of the moderator and shoot a few, if you see streaks on it? That will do it? Good luck

Ive tried shooting it with it off, and then i tried it with the entire shroud off, to see if it would make a difference, but it shot almost exactly the same, shotgun like pattern ive seen with all of my other pellets and slugs. As for speed, my chrony consistenly read the JSB ko’s at about ~930 fps, but there would be a few with about ~15 fps fluctuations. Not sure if thats a reg problem, but i dont think that would cause severe accuracy issues like im seeing here.

Also, where could i get some bore lapping compound? Ive heard of the JB bore paste, would that work? Also worth noting, my liners have been shot a bit. I’d guess theres probably about 300 pellets/slugs through each of them too. Id guess it should probably be out of its break in cycle now, shouldnt it? But anyways thanks for the help guys!

I'm no authority on the FX liner system, had one, didn't like it much. IMO it's a complex system with too many points for potential problems. That said, I think it's very possible your liners just need cleaning, mine fouled rather quickly. But you should really clean it, not just pull through patches. Use a good rod and nylon brush, with something like Ballistol, and scrub it well, especially near the breech and muzzle. Polishing with JB Paste might help. I would stay away from lapping compound except as a last resort.

I've had a bunch of fx liners/barrels. I always use .218 slugs first of all.

Secondly, I also always polish, clean, and wax mine. And they will last an entire season without needing cleaning. Between several stx, superior, and a normal smooth twist. It's been quite a while since any of them have needed cleaning.

Only ever polish them once. It can make a huge difference. My 380mm stx used to need cleaning about every 2-300 shots. Now, I cannot get it to foul for anything.
