I recently purchased a Taipan Veteran and was a bit surprised by how loud it seemed. Relative to my Daystate and FX rifles it was quieter, but louder than I had expected.
I have two high end moderators(0db and Impulse Air with an additional baffle) on my other air rifles, and I figured I could check them out on the Taipan.
Frankly they produced no significant sound reduction other than a minor tonal change. I used an iPhone db meter (no change in db noted) and I realized it was inaccurate. However to my ear, the two high-end moderators I tried produced no significant audible change.
I then decided to purchase a Silent Thunder Ordinance Falx based on their description of the Nicola Tesla Gas Diode implementation. I contacted the company and they quickly replied with a suggestion for the standard unit for shooting JSB 18s at 850 FPS. Frankly I did not expect much.
However to my surprise, the reduction of sound was extremely impressive to my ear. I tried it outside and in my garage and the difference with and without the moderator was substantial. In fact, it was far better than expected. It truly quieted the Taipan to my expectations.
I have absolutely no tie to STO, and I'm writing this just to help others. The problem I face is that since there is no airgun shop nearby, I have to rely on online reviews which are often inaccurate. I've been disappointed more than once. Online moderator reviews are especially difficult to interpret in the context of your own expectations.
My hope is that this short note will help others decide.
