Stupid question of the day????

They recommend one size larger because they don’t trust the machining on guys guns. If a high powered .22+ clips the mod, destruction can occur. With a little .177 and the mods internals still being what they are in the larger calibers, they can handle some clipping if the guns tolerances aren’t what they should be.

It's important to make sure the moderator IS what you think it is(disassemble and examine/measure internals, measure exit holes, weigh it, etc...). Moderator companies may change specs, materials, internals, etc... over time and they may or may not give notice or this change. This means that the ".22 XYZ brand" moderator that you just bought sounds/performs differently than the "exact same" model moderator you bought a couple of years ago. It may explain why some people report different experiences using "the same" moderator on the same gun(at similar power levels) also.
