Sudden onset inaccurracy - Benji Trail NP2

Something has gone wrong with my Benji Trail NP2 (0.22 cal). Sudden onset inaccuracy and significant velocity drop. Normally I shoot the JSB 14.3gr at right around 800 fps. Group size at 10m is right around 0.3"CTC. Now it's shooting like a shotgun 1.5" grouping and down to 700-720fps.

I cleaned the barrel with balistol and patches, barrel wasn't too dirty. Scope is fine, all screws are tight and the cocking effort seems normal. Any ideas? Regards

My SWAG is the piston seal is damaged and needs to be replaced. This is why the FPS has dropped.

I forgot to add that you should do the tissue test to check the breech seal and I suggest that you change it when/if you replace the piston seal. Good luck & keep us posted on what you find.

If you are dead set on staying with a springer, then save the money you will spend trying to repair the B. Trail and spend it on a quality springer. Not a NP springer as you will never be happy with those. JMHO

If you are not stuck on springers, then look into multipumpers or PCP. Just a thought. (smile)

NP "springers" are not usually considered to be quality airguns in general and for good reason.

They jump around more than the comparable spring gun, so are harder to control.

Not to mention that most of the advertised fps for NPs are grossly exaggerated even though those figures are NOT what you really want in an airgun shooting pellets.

Oh well... I am not a springer guy, so take what I say with that in mind. However, if you really want to stick with springers, then buy a quality springer which actually uses a steel spring. Not ANY Nitro piston. If you truly want power, you will have to go to either PCP or powder burner.

JMHO based on what I have read over the last many years concerning springers. (smile)

Well, I like the rifle. It's accurate and it's my first airgun from 2016 so I am going to try to fix it. I reckon I'll replace the piston seal for $5-$10 and see if it fixes it. If not I'll move on. My R9 and HW30 are keeping me shooting for now.

Good luck to you! Seeing that you own an R9 and HW30 tells me that you are not a novice to springers. (smile)

With a R9 and Hw30 do you even need the Benji Trail?

badger5th the rifle Is relatively easy to take apart but you will need a spring compressor (quick grip clamp or a sash clamp) as there is considerable preload in the ram. Youtube has many videos on dismantling benjamin gas rams. Personally I use the sash clamp.
Does the end of the shot sound like the piston is slamming into the end of the compression chamber? I noticed that on my Benjamin Titan and after dismantling it was the seal. As mentioned above seals can be purchased from Custom Air Seals in Australia. He also sells the rams but you might be able to purchase a new piston and breach seal from Crosman.

Understandable wanting to fix it. My first was a Hatsan Model 95 .25 cal in 2015 and although it's now a springer, not a gas ram, I still have it 7 1/2 years later and still very much enjoy shooting it and that's even owning an HW95, R9 and 2 R7's.
Should be fairly easy to get the NP2 ram, seals and any other parts you need from Crosman, since their Crosman branded guns use the same parts as the Benji's do. Might be half a thought to order a couple each of the piston and breech seals since it never hurts to have spares handy.

Right, it gets stranger. Tried several strings over the chrony and compared the velocities with previous data. MV's back to normal. Accuracy still a little off but that could be me. Finally tried a string of 33.95gr JSB Beasts. Before was 450 fps, now up to 550 fps. Only thing that's different is possible dieseling from the cleaning with ballistol I did yesterday. I cleaned and dried it as best I could but still notice a slight burned smell that wasn't there before. Still, the accuracy was good and velocity SD only 5fps for 10 pellets so I don't know...

Been yring to find a good way to Guage a ram .

I kinda figured a bathroom scale to press it down on ti see how much weight it took . Then what do you really have to go by then ..lol..

Well like said above start with the simple things And work inward. At least like strve52 says its a gun more easy to get a part for like if the ram went bad.

Also some atmospheric conditions on my ram guns can cause that issue. Like go from stright shooting to kinda sad cant do a group its broken acting then straighten back out in a hour or so fine and dandy . Go figure 🤔. (P.s hates colder weather).

Saw a couple of Youtube vids on taking down the Benji Trail. Have a good idea how to do it. I'm going to pick up an 18" clamp and give it a try. If all looks good will shrug and put it back together. New seals otherwise.

Gary, No slamming type sensation when shooting. Feels like an abrupt but slightly cushioned thud, more noticable with heavier pellets but even noticeable with 11.75gr alloys.
