Suggstions for a new PCP owner

Just placed an order for a new AV Avenger from Pyramyd. This is the first PCP rifle for me and I'm curious what the best suggestions are for getting it filled. I've looked at compressors as well as tank systems and am leaning towards the tank right now. Mostly because I can get it filled locally for free and it's fairly portable.

Interested to hear your suggestions and experiences with both. Any particular brands, sizes, and where to buy would be appreciated.

Tank systems look to be pretty pricey and difficult to find in stock right now.

Thanks!

Can these tanks be legally filled and transported here in the US? I'm under the impression that if it has no DOT certification, you can't get it filled or legally transport them? I won't have to pay for the fill, but the tank will need to have a current safety inspection, etc...

If you want to get the most from your new Avenger, you will need a tank that can be filled to 4500 psi and a fill source that can fill that high. Is your supplier of free air able to fill that high? Legally, you will need a DOT certified, in test cylinder to transport or fill at a dive shop. If you fill it yourself, as many people do, then it won't matter unless you run into an overzealous Mr Plod. What's best for you, will depend on your circumstances.

Appreciate the replys. Sorry if it wasn't clear, but I have a relative with access to the equipment to fill to 4500psi, it just needs to be done legally so he's not on the hook with the insurance company if anything goes wrong.

I thought about possibly buying a Yong Heng (or similar) inexpensive air compressor and a lightly used CF wrapped SCBA tank that has expired. That combo would allow me to fill via the compressor or the tank and would cost about the same as a new DOT certified tank set up. Unfortunately, no free fills or dive shop fills with that tank though.

Really like the idea of having the tank in the car if I go out small game hunting and need to refill in the field.

How many fills are reasonably expected from a 100 cu. ft tank at 4500psi in a 180cc rifle? Anyone have an estimate? I'm curious about that.

Thanks!

There are no 100 cubic foot tanks unless they are overfilled to 4700 psi. All one-hour SCBA tanks are 9 litres in liquid volume. Their true capacity is 88 CF at 4500 psi. Some companies use creative estimates to exaggerate how much they hold to get an advertising advantage over their competitors. Since the Avenger has a max fill pressure of 300 BAR, you will only get a couple of full fills from a 310 BAR (4500psi) full cylinder. If you only fill to 3600 psi, like in the calculation above, you will get more fills but not as many shots per fill. If the calculation above was made using 100 CF as the data for the equation, 22 fills will be a bit optimistic. I still think that it's worth getting the tank as it's the most convenient way of filling and having a free source of air makes it all the more appealing.

So is this real or fake?

Yes, I would say that his claim is false. His tanks are 9- litre, the same as everybody else's. There are 12-litre tanks available from Acecare, so his claim about having the largest is bogus anyway. The cubic foot capacity is estimated by calculating how much space the contents of the tank will displace at atmospheric pressure. All the carbon tanks are in standard sizes like 9 L-1 hour, 6.8 L-45 min, 4.5 L- 30 min and so on. I did a quick calculation and came to these figures 9-litre at 310 BAR is 2790 litres or 98.5 cubic feet. 6.8- litre at 310 BAR is 2108 litres or 74.44 cubic feet. My method of calculating may be different than that used by others. That is probably why there are variations in the advertised capacities some dealers are claiming. I would take everything claimed by the above company with a bucket of salt.

Seems to be lots of "may" and "probably" in the above.

I have a Great White and highly recommend it.

Well, at least he is being honest and clear. I have nothing against the “Great White” or the “Tiger Shark” (in fact they are great names) but the question asked of Eaglebeak is whether the claim of “largest Carbon Fiber Tank available for airguns” was false. he gave what I felt was a good and clear answer. Furthermore, his answer ties 100% with what I have seen, and read, elsewhere.

Thanks again for the insight guys. Looks like I'll start off with a DOT certified and inspected tank fill system for now.

Next set of questions... 😂

The Great White set up looks pretty nice. Anyone currently using them? Anyone do business with airtanksforsale.com before? I'm a bit hesitant to pull the trigger on a $700-800 tank without any references or reviews. Appears to be a legit retailer in the air gun community though.

That is highly debatable. His prices are the highest in the game and he uses unsavoury practices to bamboozle novices into forking out their hard-earned for products that they could get a better deal on elsewhere. Do you really want to pay three times as much for your tank and fill adaptor than you paid for your gun? Do a bit of research, you should be able to pick up a used tank with plenty of years left on it and a fresh hydro test for less than a couple of hundred bucks. Or if you must have new, there are plenty of cheaper options.

I have purchased multiple items from airtanksforsale. I've always had excellent assistance for any questions asked and fast shipping on anything ordered. Can you find cheaper? Probably. Do you want to always look for "cheaper" for HPA parts? Not me. But others will certainly have other views.

Here I have to agree with bandg.

Brancato’ s prices may be high, or seem high, but that is his prerogative, just as it’s your prerogative to buy cheaper from someone else. However he is definitely a legit retailer, period. Not just for the airgun community. I have also not heard anyone complain about the quality of his product, just about the price. Furthermore, he often has stuff in stock and ready to ship when no one else has them. I would also add that I am prepared to pay some premium (just not too much) for “Made in America”.

Yeah, no problem ordering from Joe B. at airtanksforsale. I have a Great White with all the trimmings and recently ordered a Guppy from him. The second gauge for knowing what's left in the tank is great. There's no need to use a separate dead head and waste air.

Same here. It isn't "necessary" by any means and several have stated they see no need for it. I like knowing how much air is in the tank without the extra fuss.

Thanks for the numbers, always wondered as most folks just put the calculator to use in a link and I can’t get it to work as I am always missing some numbers. so thanks
