Summer heat and keep on Shoot’n

Hello everyone,

Well it is that time of the year here in Deep East Texas where I am forced to move my Bench Rest inside the air conditioned shop to get away from the heat. It is 98f and climbing with a Feels Like temperature of 113f and Humidity of 55% and almost no wind. I am a Summer time person but at 81 years old I just cannot take a lot of this 100+ temp. I did shoot a bunch outside early this morning with the Crown but shut down early. The first photo is how I am set up with my Diana Bandit to shoot paper targets at 10-meters, second photo. Scored an 83 on the first target and with the A/C and a fan running I am ready for the rest of the Summer. I can shoot 10-meters all the way out to 75-yards with this setup.

What are you doing to cope with the Summer heat ?

Have a great day,
ThomasT

I went out to range about 8:30 am (was only 65 degrees or so and little wind/breeze.) I shot rimfire 50 yard target with my Maveric 25 cal and JSB 34 grain pellets.

Found out the Maveric doesn't like to get real dirty. After about 100 shots today and another 100 or so a couple weeks ago, it started shooting like a shotgun. Oh well, I did a deep clean of barrel today so I should be good for a couple cards next time out. Love real cool, quiet mornings. It's in 80s now.

Hello rsfrid,

I had to laugh out loud when you said "it was shooting like a shotgun". Oh my 65 degrees that temp is a long time coming down here. Great looking card that you shot. On that target you only get a 10 when the hole is completely within the "ring". There are 9 "targets" and the perfect score is 100 but you have to shoot all 9 shots within the 9 bulls eye. It is designed for 25 and 50 yards but I use it for my pistol at 10-meters.

Have a great day,
ThomasT

Great setup, & mighty fine shooting!

Been hot & sticky here too, not deep Texas temps but the humidity makes you feel like you're wearing a wet blanket. Real humdinger of a storm last night, lost power for about 9 hours.

Shooting from under a solid deck, so at least shaded. Have been using a small fan too, which helps when there's no breeze. But I'm looking forward to October.

Hello wolfmangreg,

If we could have 11 months of October then I would settle for whatever on that 12th month :p

@ThomasT That sounds like a comfortable setup you have. I think it’s great that you’re still able to get out and shoot at 81. In this climate I tend to set up under a tree or two and use the sweaty brow with sweat running into my eyes, and mosquitoes, horseflies, and other bugs flying in my face and biting me as practice for hunting in this season. That works ok up to around 96F as long as I stay hydrated. When temps get higher than that, it’s time to wait until the evening for it to cool off some.

Hello Ezana4CE,

I don't get around as much as I used to but I do try and shoot every day that weather permits. Setting up in my shop does allow me to shoot all summer and in the cold of winter, but I really like to be outside. The mosquitoes were bad this morning but after sun up they normally are gone.

Have a great day,

Across the border to the north of you. Heat index is 110 right now but then again I was shooting Christmas week in a t shirt

Yep I know what you mean, I mow my yard in December???? One day I get a sun burn and two days later we have a ice storm.

Have a great day,

I think again this year summer have decided to just flip off us Danes, here a daytime temperature of 25 deg C or mote constitute a summer day, but where i live we have only had 3 of those so far.
Actually for the next 9 days the hottest guess at temperatures by the weather gurus are 21 deg C.

So low pressures muck around playing havoc with my pellets / slugs

Not that it will stop me, and i have at last remembered to put a few BR50 cards in my backpack, and today i also took delivery of 5 more boxes of 13 gr Zan slugs, and a pack of 3" Birchwood Shoot N C targets, which should suffice if my guns want to play ball with me on the 80/90 M distances.

Hello Peashooter,

You can send some of that mid 70's temperature right over here. Hope you have a great weekend shooting.

I have found that i do not like hot days as much as i use to do, i am not sure if it is my age, or the additional 30 - 40 Kg of padding i am carrying around.
But good weather ( high pressure ) = no wind, and we do have lovely big trees on the property to seek shade under.
The downside is there are physical work to do too, and i cant quit it as my even worse off friend with the severe arthritis are counting on me,,,,,, and doing as much as he can and then some.

We got the backside of the mountain to do, that is shoveling and moving sand - mix it in with concrete and then put it on the fake mountain, that i recon are another 3 - 400 Kg. ( dry weight )
And then there is the bridge to finish, though we have made good progress on the 3 support pilings, but then there are a lot of yards of track to level and secure, and as we have decided to redo the inner loop so it can also cross the bridge, well a lot of stakes to yank out of the ground and reposition.

So more work for me scooting along on my fat ass while i pound in stakes and level things out, last time i did that i only did like 5 - 7 staked a hour, and they are spaced out about 5 feet or so.
The issue of ramming the 3" stakes 2 feet into the ground is the least of the problems, the worst thing is getting up from a seated position after doing some,,,,, i am sure dont look or sound as elegant as it did 30 years ago.
A lot of moaning and joints aching and cracking.

The bridge take up a lot of space in the "shot shed" even if it is by no means a small shed we have.

Good morning everyone,

Boy how nice it is to shoot from inside my shop this hot morning. Already shot over 100 rounds and tested several pellets at different settings and then shot this 30-Yard Challenge target. Another 199 for me, I just cannot get that one more point , but I have all day to shoot .

Have a great day,
ThomasT
