Surprising scope comparison

I should hang an eye chart at 50 yards to compare optics, hmmmmm.
@Scotty1 That’s actually pretty creative. If you do that, let us know how the clarity varies. For me, I definitely look for light gathering ability in low light conditions. Not sure how the eye chart would help to gauge that aspect of the glass quality.

If you want to get technical Look up the NBS resolution charts or a camera test chart.

Thank you!

My recommendations are:

FFP: Athlon Midas TAC 6-24x50

SFP: Athlon Midas BTR gen2 4.5-27x50

If you take your time and look for sales, both can be had for approx $500.
So I’m seeing all this mention of Athlon on several posts. So I go to their website. OMG, their line up is as difficult to choose from as this optics thread. Wow.

Randy,

yes, it is difficult.
But here's a shortcut:

Download their catalog from their website, here:

On page 90 they have tables with all the specs of all their scopes, side-bys-side.
In the next section they show all their reticles in full detail.
(doing this on a tiny phone screen surely will produce frustration....)

Decide on some basic specs that are important to you: I'd suggest considering the following:

?: Minimum parallax of 10y, 25y, 50y?

?: Maximum magnification: 12x, 20x, 27x?

?: Price: In descending order (roughly): Cronus — Ares — Midas — Helos — Heras — Argos — etc.

This will quickly throw out the bulk of scopes, then you get to decide the finer specs.... 😊

Matthias

PS: I have made Scope Specs Tables for three magnification ranges,
▪ 3-12x | 3-9x
▪ 4-16x | 4-20x | 3-18x
▪ 6-24x | 4-24x | 5-30x
where all have 10y parallax (or 15y),
exposed turrets,
and a hold-off reticle (no BDC).
For about 200 scopes total.
Let me know if interested.

Yupp, me too.
And I'm really trying to like Athlon!

But the company has this maddening habit of making their higher magnification scopes (27x and up) with a parallax that is way out there for my airgun needs (25y). 😟

I just looked at a bunch of 6-36x, 5-40x, and 5-50x scopes today and those came with a 10y parallax....
Athlon, pleeeeease, I want to buy a 4.5-30x or similar from you, but make it focus down to my airgun ranges.... 🙏🏼

Thank you!

I am very glad we have the selections we do.
There is something for everybody.
How grateful I am!

Dirtnap,

well said, very well said! 👍🏼

Your observation about the wide selection available to us is dead on:
As picky and as particular as my tastes and wishlists usually are — Somebody must have made sure I come to airgunning just at the right time...!

Because the options at my price level are simply amazing —
not just in scopes but in guns as well.
And it's just those functions and features that I value most in scopes and in guns — that have come at an affordable-to-me price only in very recent years!

Yes, I am very thankful! 😊

We seem to live in the GAGAG — the Golden Age of AirGunning.
