Taipan Long “Sniper”

@peaceful_ruler,

Just thought I better step back in here and clarify. I wasn't poo pooing on your awesome Vet or your tuning of it. Sounds like you're getting exceptional accuracy, an impressive shot count, and most importantly, a gun that is meeting your needs.

You've been able to achieve a Vet that shoots slugs accurately. I have personally not gotten there, and not for lack of trying. Great job!

I'm living in pellet-ville with my highest FPE Veteran. BCs around 0.05 with the .22/MRDs at about 45fpe. You cite a BC of 0.08. That difference from 0.08 to 0.05 is a big enough difference to make a difference.

Please keep posting about your Vet project and hopefully my comments weren't perceived as an attempt to take away from what you've been able to achieve with "Sniper."

I tried some 20.2s in the 0.2175 size today. I think that's the last 20.2 diameter size for me to try out of this barrel.

It was bad. First two went into the same hole @ 100 yards and I had a little flutter in my chest thinking THIS is it. But it went down hill fast from there. Wind was really grabbing them. Shot 20, all holding on the same aim point at 100 yards and the group was smeared right and low, probably 8 inches overall. The tight ones would hit low and when the gusts hit while any of them were in the air they were curving with it, profoundly.

Shot ten into about an inch and a 1/4 at 50 but they just couldn't hold together at 100.

Lots of slugs tested through this Vet Long, with 3 different barrels. None of the accuracy produced from any combination of slugs/barrels/speeds has been as good as what you're getting from Sniper.

Again, I commend you.

With the .22 FX Hybrid's at 985 fps I've been further dialing "Sniper" in. We had less wind this morning so I shot 5 5-shot groups and 3 3-shot groups at 50 meters...all fit under a dime except one flier! That got me pumped so I decided to push it out to 100 meters(102 meters lasered).

Wind was about a steady 5 mph from left to right and Strelok Pro was dead on with 2.9 mils. I was humbled. Both 5-shot groups came in at around 1.25" with the first one being about 2.5" to the right. 0.8 mil's to the left got me centered up. As I suspected, these 22 grain lightweights just can't buck the wind very well. Nevertheless, it is certainly an improvement over what the Hades could have done under the same circumstances!

I wonder if I'm pushing the Hybrid's just a little too fast as I've heard that staying near 900 fps is the best for minimal wind drift.

I was certainly hoping for sub-moa to continue out to 100 meters but considering I was shooting off a bipod with an 18X scope I don't think it's too shabby!

The grackles and cowbirds have certainly been feeling the heat around here...those Hybrid's are LOUD on impact. The only downside is that my bird feeder is slowly being coated with remnants of bird tissue matter.

I'm officially addicted to crack...the kind that FX Hybrid's make when they impact a fowl at 950 fps!!

Here in South-central PA the gracklings must be breeding because they are a ruckus around here. They love to land in the tops of tall Douglas firs, spruces, pines, and whatever other evergreens we have here. They must feel pretty safe in those trees because they keep coming back. The only downside is that it is hard to find them in the greenery sometimes.

My front porch is just over 50 meters from a couple of these trees and it's a perfect setup...took out close to a dozen today from the table on the porch. For "Sniper", this is a chip shot. Video gaming...

Tonight was particularly calm and every time I center-punched a grackle it sounded like a .22 short going off!!! No joke, I was worried the neighbors would start getting keyed up. It's nice not having to worry much about the Hybrid's having much energy afterwards but I wish they weren't quite so loud.

I'm officially a fan of Hybrid's out of this particular gun and feel that they are a serious threat to small game(particularly birds) out to 100 meters barring really stiff wind. Not only are they ridiculously accurate(dimes at 50 meters all day, see my post #24 above)out of my gun but they also massacre birds like no other, have one of the highest BC/weight ratios of any projectile that I know, and use less than 3 bar/shot=lots of shots/fill. They don't quite make the cut when it comes to the small game that wears fur, though; as I just don't think they will do too well in the penetration department.

I definitely want to play with the 24.8 grain NSA slugs some more and see if I can't find a speed that they like as well as these Hybrid's have(300 m/s out of my 700mm CZ barrel); but for now I'm having to much fun with these CRACKers!!

Ground hogs and other varmints will be out and about soon though and I want to find a good all around HP slug that's accurate and that walks that fine line between expansion and penetration.

I learned today that moderate wind isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as it's fairly steady. The grackles were staging in the evergreens about 80 meters out and there was a mostly steady 5-10 mph wind from east to west. I was holding 1.5 mils elevation and .3-.5 mils windage. It was cake work except when they hide in the foliage. There seems to be a never ending stream of grackles in this area.

The grackles have a weakness that I've exploited...they love to land on the highest branch of the tallest trees to survey the area. "Sniper" puts it right in the boiler room when I do my part.

We are having a cold spring here in PA. Good news...the cowbirds are over running my bird feeder and making great live targets. "Sniper" is still running very consistently and accurately as usual. I've only shot two groups at 100 meters and they were both under 1.25". I feel sure "Sniper" could do better on a still day if the stars align.

I take it this this is no longer for sale? 😉

I had the opportunity last evening to take "Sniper" on to the roof of a building where I do maintenance. There was a short window where there was no wind and I made my first shot on a grackle at 95 meters, DRT!

The wind picked up from the east then and I was holding between .8-1.2 mils for the rest of the evening. Total count for the evening was 4 down...

At one point I wanted to verify my zero so I took three shots at a spot on a post at 50 meters. I kid you not that all three shots would have fit under a dime easily! The precision of this Taipan is unreal...

Very nice! Love my Vet. Going to change out my existing scope for a new Veyron.

Where did you get those breech block covers. ?

The smooth quiet shot cycle on the Taipan is awesome and they did a great job with the built in moderator. Super quiet for how much power they have . I think it's a highly underrated airgun. What Veyron did you get ? Is it working out ?

The breech block covers are available from Eric on the forum, I believe he goes by the name Papy Yosh.
If you can’t locate him, send me a PM and I’ll forward you his contact information

I spent some time today with "sniper" and the new glass...Optika6 5-30x56 FFP. Once zeroed at 50 meters it was game on. I punched a one way ticket for two cow birds at the bird feeder and a starling at about 80 meters. The FX Hybrid slugs are devastating on small game...when I do the "texas heart shot" on birds it usually blows their head off on the exit side.
