Just ordered a Taipan Mutant shorty based on all the positive feedback on here and other forums.

It was a total impulse purchase which isn't like me (and it's my second one is as many weeks). My Cricket broke and I am too used to using a regulated bullpup to be without one while I find somewhere to get it repaired.

I'd like to hear from others who own the "shorty". I'm not sure I made the right decision (instead of buying the standard or Regulated Jkhan Iluda) and I want to know how people like them?

Does all the positive feedback also apply to the shorty?

You really screwed up!!!!!
Buy you some good dust towels as you will be dusting your other guns a lot.
You will not be able to buy another PCP that is MORE fun to shoot.
Its called the Mutant trap, A lot of us are in the trap,,
It seem the 16gr JSBs are the wonder pellet on the shorty's
Mine even like the 16 gr Polymags
QUSTION>
How the heck did you break a Cricket, Drop it off the roof?

This makes me feel better!

Pretty much everywhere I found that sells it says that it comes with the CZ. The only difference I could find was that the CZ is an optional extra at Talon Tunes which confused me because the alternative was to pay $75 less for the option that also comes with a CZ barrel. Not sure if the non-CZ is available anymore.

My concern was only that I hadn't done nearly the amount of research I normally do before buying a new air gun. I just saw a pic of the two next to each other and I suddenly became possessed with airgun envy for the Shorty and clicked "order now". Then I realized that most of what I read was from people who owned the standard.

I didn't do anything to break my Cricket. It just stopped working. When I went to shoot, it just makes a quiet clicking sound and the pellet stays in the barrel. I know nothing about fixing air guns but my guess is that the valve stem has snapped. It was the only issue I could find that sounded similar when I tried to research it.

I'm very careful with my airguns because I don't like scratches or dents. Not sure what caused this issue but it's not the first problem I've had with it. The indexing pin broke after less than 3 months. Luckily it's still under warranty. Just hoping I don't have any issues getting it fixed... I'm looking forward to owning a gun that is more robust...

Don't feel bad zebra! I just traded one of my Vulcans with a YF member yesterday for a Mutant Standard! Supposed to sell one of the (many for me) PCPs that I accumulated, and that first was my original plan, but my discipline broke down when I saw one Mutant Standard with CZ advertised by a well-known member. Now, I am back to where I started! :)

Good luck with your new (incoming) Mutant...and best of accuracy!

Thank you so much! I'll drop you a PM.

Your .30 Shorty looks like the most fun airgun in the history of air guns. Why can't manufacturers make stuff like that too.... Almost everyone with a head likes a compact, lightweight, powerful, accurate, quiet and well priced air gun.

I always enjoy seeing pics of Ernest's custom airguns. Him and that Chuck guy from pimp my airguns make the best looking stuff by miles.

It arrived!

This thing is awesome! It came with a report showing a shot string with an extreme spread so small that you would have thought somebody was using a time machine to chrony the same shot over and over again (almost all 813-815fps with 18g JSB's). It also had a six shot 35 yard group that was one hole. Not a ragged hole. You would assume only one pellet had passed through it (almost).

I know 35 yards is not much of a test and I intend to stretch it out a lot more but it's a great start for a gun that is only 22" long. It feels more like a pistol carbine than many actual PCP pistol carbines. I think the main point is that it seems unlikely that the store would send out a defective Mutant by mistake. I guess they could miss a slow leak but they couldn't complete the test with any more serious issues. That's the way it should be on a $1,000+ gun. Good!

It came with a quick disconnect adapter on the fill probe already. Nice. I had forgotten to order yet another one of those things. It also came with two 12 round mags, a single shot tray, multiple sets of O rings and some other replacement parts I haven't identified yet. The mags are a simple non-self-indexing design like the Cricket and Wildcat which is good. I hate having to pay $100 for a new mag so simple is better.

I ordered from Wild West btw. It was my first purchase from them and it was painless. I'm not sure if they do the testing or the factory but either way, I was greatful. It arrived quickly too, which I like. Order went in Monday night (so effectively Tuesday) and I was signing for it 9.15 this morning (Friday). I guess they test them in advance (or they are very efficient). I'd buy from them again I think.

I have to say that I had assumed that all the positive feedback had included a degree of exaggeration but I was wrong. I put 4 mags (48 shots) through it as soon as I zeroed the scope which took it from 225bar down to 130bar. It was fun! It's the quietest air gun I have ever used too. Every other manufacturer should copy their shroud design. It's twice as effective as the Crickets (or anything else). More like ant fart than mouse fart. My wife had no idea I was shooting in the next room along. It feels as solid as everyone says. It's very accurate, consistent and easy to shoot. It's light. In fact it's a backbacker / small game hunter's dream. The side lever can be moved over for lefties too...

I don't love the stock but I wasn't expecting to. It's doesn't look too bad on the Shorty (in person) and it rests flat on a table which makes shooting consistently easy without a rest. It's the grip I don't like. Not sure if it's my hand or a design issue but it doesn't matter. I've nearly finished carving a new stock design to make one in carbon fiber. Until it's ready, I can more than live with the one it came with. I think all stocks should be made to accept AR grips like the Impact so we can choose our own though.

I've been using it with a Clearidge RM 12oz 3-9 x 32 (taken from my Cricket) until I decide on what to buy for it. The small and lightweight clearidge works well on the tiny Shorty but, because it's so light, I feel it could work with something bigger without sacrificing it's awesome maneuverability.

My initial impressions of the Taipan Mutant are that it could well be the best PCP bullpup on the market at any price range. I definitely did not expect to be saying that. It was only meant to be a stop-gap until my Cricket was repaired.... I've had the opportunity to try a lot of different brands. Not as many as some but more than most. This one is just better. The caveat is that I only just got the thing so I could change my mind tomorrow or discover something I don't like but I don't think I will.

I'm already planning on buying the 25 cal when it's released and I never buy the same gun in different calibers normally.

"iride"Just wait until you break it in with a few shoots, Its going to flip you out as far as the accuracy of the little gun..
Mine likes the 16 gr JSB pellets , I shoot at 48 yards,
You are now in the Mutant Trap, and there is nothing you can do,
You are doomed,,,,,,,,,
Mike
I think you're right. I'm meant to be sleeping now but I can't stop shooting it.... The trigger is amazing. Feels nothing like any bp trigger I have ever used.

"amoxom"Welcome to the club. These guns are absolute lasers!! You will end up grabbing this one more than any other gun you own... It really is that good isn't it?
Yup. It's a revelation. The quality gives me a feeling of "this is what I originally expected from a high end gun before I got one".

It's hard to imagine it not becoming my main gun and I had gone off 22 cal guns a while ago. I only had 22 cal pellets at home because I was waiting for the Ataman Ultra Carbine. When they bring out the 25, I may never use my other airguns again. They suddenly feel like the buggy whip in the age of the automobile.

I feel the same way about the Mutant. Now my Daystate rifles get very little love. As soon as the .25 is out it is very possible a Daystate will be listed for sale to fund the purchase.

As noted above several times, the quality is above what you would expect at the price point. Just a few small refinements here and there and the Mutant could honestly be the top dog in the PCP market.
