Tuning Taipan Standard in .177 ( 18" barrel ) - anyone shooting slugs with one?

Curious. If so, and you have them shooting well - might you share the secret sauce? ;-) ( reg pressure if you know it, HS turned in X number of times, fps your chucking them at . . . etc ... )

I've got a couple of boxes of NSA 12.5's that shoot *really* well out of my old m-rod with the reg turned up a bit. It shoots them at around 955-960 and they are *really* repeatedly consistently, accurate. The m-rod does have a slightly longer barrel @20". It's an LW - I'm pretty sure the one in the Tapian is either an LW or possible a CZ . . . just a little shorter.

I thought I'd try them out in my Taipan but so far . . . I'm just pulling my hair out - I cannot find a "happy place" speed wise to get consistent, accurate, repeatable shot placement with it and the 12.5 slugs. The Taipan is VERY happy with AA 10.3 pellets - @880-890 it practically stacks them on top of one another out in my back yard at 30-35 yards.

It may - just.not.like.them ( these 12.5 slugs ). Period. {sigh} I'm toying with getting a sample pack or two of the slightly heavier 15g's (NSA's) to see if maybe it would play nice with them . . . figured I'd toss this out to you guys first though to go fishing and see if perhaps any of you are already running them with some success.

I tried the 12.5 and some of pre-production 10.5's in the VET, neither shot that well relative to JSB / AA 10.3 Pellets.

Not sure what barrel is on VET standard .177's ? But do know in my other LW barrel .177's they shoot fantastic !!

Update on this:

( @motorhead ) Scott -- you've expressed having had similar experience with the nsa 12.5's as I did with this gun / barrel. I'd ordered a package of "Griffin" slugs just to try - I'd tried them out once in the past w/my .22 and while they shot exceptionally well . . . the equivalent nsa's shot just as well for less money.

. . . anyway. These finally showed up today and honestly - I wasn't even going to bother testing them as I've got the .177 Taipan dialed shooting the 10.3's and it's wickedly accurate out to 70 yards - probably further but I didn't get a chance to take it beyond that. I wasn't going to mess with it but . . . these Griffin slugs showed up. ( Scratching head . . . " what to do? " ) I'll just load up a magazine with them and shoot it w/out touching the gun - the gun was shooting the 10.3's at 885-890. I set up a target in the back yard at 30 yards and pull the trigger - it lands a little low - maybe half inch. Shrug shoulders - ok - send another two or three and see if they all hit about a half inch low too. They do. (!) Holy crap.

I then ran a couple over my chrony to see just what they were flying at - yeah - 772. I turn up the hammer spring a little over 1 full turn and now at 850 fps I'm getting dime sized ( less then a dime actually ) groups out of it. I'm amazed. And bummed out. This could cost me money - they're not the cheapest things in the world - but boy do they seem to shoot. I'm not sure what the difference is beside the additional .5g in weight ( lol . . . 12.5 v 13 ) but . . . but pleasantly surprised!

( I think I've read that they're really soft lead sort of like the FX Hybrids . . . maybe that allows them to 'conform' to the barrel better . . . . ? )

Yea ... .177 slugs have been a interesting chase for accuracy. leaning on the taipan for higher power is not something I'm going to do being it seems like yourself it rocks with 10.3's in about 900's giving a bunch of shots !!

If I want high power for slugs or heavy pellets i simply pull out my JSAR mini in .177 and get after it !!! It runs in the low 30 fpe range just cruising along.
